What are generally the best sugars to use when homebrewing? I currently use liquid malts and dextrose and I'm just looking for some different flavours

If you have to ...................use corn sugar.

Dextrose is non fermentable, it is used to add flavor and mouthfeel.

I would reccomend using malt extract in place of sugar.

Honey is a good substitute for sugar, but be careful not to overdo it. 4lbs dry malt extract + 2 pounds of honey makes a fine brew.

Here is a slightly modified "Rocky Raccoons" honey lager
courtesy of Charlie Papazain - I always have some of this on hand, it is fantastic and easy to brew:

4 lbs plain light dried malt extract
2 pounds light clover honey
1/2 pound Victory toasted malt
1/2 pound cara-pils malt
1 1/2 oz cascade hops (boiling
1/2 oz cascade hops (finishing)
1-2 pkgs dry lager yeast

Steep grains in 1 gallon of hot water for 45 min.,
Sparge into boiling pot, add malt, boiling hops, and honey to 1 1/2 gal water and boil for 60 min. add finshing hops, boil 2 more minutes, sparge into fermenter and add cold water to make 5 gal. pitch yeast when cool, bottle when fermentation is complete

Well my parents used such to make choke cherry wine. They used an old metal milk can
and had it on the floor register. Once they left
a can on the floor register too long and it made a big popping sound the lid blew off and the stuff was splattered all over the kitchen and the hall. It was a real humdinger of a mess!
After that they invested in a wine making kit!
Why they used beet sugar is because my Grandmother grew beets on her farm in Stanley Ontario! Fresh beets are far better than the store ones of course! They are sure hard to pull out of the ground especially when
there's some clay in the soil. Sugar beets make
good wine for choke cherries! Can't drink Alcohol anymore.. diabetis

I prefer steeping my own selection of malts so that I can control the exact flavor profile. You could also use wheat or rice in your beer or even I suppose you could use corn, but I'm not sure what that would taste like. Are you planning on entering the Sam Adams brewing challenge?
