canine behaviorist
A dog trainer will learn training methods, and teach individual dogs or a class full of dogs. However, a behaviorist figures WHY the dog behaves as he does, and what motivates it, and corrects the problem from the base, or inside..
That is what I am.
for instance, a small dog is peeing on the bed.
.the trainer will make the dog stop peeing on the bed, whether by force, or reward.
.the behaviorist determines what is making the dog so insecure that he is peeing on the bed, and finds the way to make the small dog feel more secure..
MorePark Community College, in CA has an outstanding animal behavioral sciences course, and cost much less than some colleges.> http://www.moorparkcollege.edu/~eatm/

Cesar Millan, one of my personal heroes, has a job that he kind of created himself. He's known as a dog behaviorist/psychologist. Although there are and were dog behaviorists before him, it is Cesar's technique that distinguishes his work and its effectiveness. What's really great about Cesar is that he fully understands what causes most, if not all of the problems associated with domestic dogs; the usage of human psychology on the dog by the owner. It is integral for Millan to understand how these dogs are being treated so he can not only identify a dogs "issues", but also identify what the dog owner is doing to create them. I would personally study animal psychology, of course emphasizing dog behavior, but also study a great deal of human psychology, since this is the area that Cesar bases all of his diagnosis on. This is a great profession and I encourage anyone interested in helping dogs or animals to pursue it.
