Although I'm not a fan of rote prayers, I did hear a nice variant of that from some friends of mine. At least it doesn't freak a kid out like the other one does.

It goes like this: Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep; watch and guide me through the night and wake me with the morning light.

They didn't. The prayer is the same:

Now I lay me down to sleep

I pray the Lord my soul to keep

If I die before I wake

I pray the Lord my soul to take.

Thats strange. Most people on here have answered with the bedtime prayer being :
"Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my sould to keep,
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take"
But when I learnt the prayer,it went like this:
"Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
Guide and guard me through the night,
And wake me with the morning's light."

At least you brought laughter to the Q&A section of R&S thank you for that. That was cute.... even though I'm rolling here... LOL

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my SOUL to keep
if I die before I wake
I pray the Lord my SOUL to take.

Who's "they"... and how come no one e-mailed me when they made that change. Um, how old are you to still be praying that? If you are honestly looking to find out how to pray, look up the Lord's Prayer. God bless.

Who changed it? I didn't notice.

When my kids pray with me, we simply talk with God about the important things in our life. Not use any pre-set words, except for adding the Lord's Prayer on the end of our prayer sometimes.

Yes, I noticed they reworded it and made the change a few years ago, disturbing but just a sign of the times my friend.

EDIT-- I don't know who "they" are, but if you go into Christian bookstores now this prayer has been changed and the "die before I sleep" part has been removed.

I believe that's pray the lord my soul to take.

It's from a Metallica song.

now i lay me down to sleep
i pray the lord my soul to keep
if i should die before i wake
i pray the lord my soul to take

i didn't teach it to my kids becuase i seems to focus on death, kind of morbid. also i want my kids to learn to talk to god, not recite some memorized prayer.

if you are using this to show people your talent for poetry and humor, give them both up. It's wasn't that creative nor funny, just weird.
