Hey homie. Do you really want to help your brother? or do you want to inflate your ego by saying you helped him. What if he told you he gets nervous around women, because he's gay. What if he told you his "flu" was AIDS? Would you still want to help him. If you REALLY want to help him. These things would not matter. They probably are not true, but you have to be ok with it if they are...if you're genuinely concerned about HIM. Coax him into social situations...may baby steps at first..."let's go have a sandwich and a beer" or "let's go to the movies, or watch a game" whatever to get him into social situations. They watch. See what really seems to appeal to him. What type of people, what type of events does he seem most comfortable with. Watch TV with him, and let him pick the channels. Just observe he choose. Accentuate the positive things. "Oh! I didn't realize you life outdoor shows! Let's try to put together a camping trip, or hiking/back packing" for instance. Accentuate constructive behavior that may help pull him out of depression. Let him know you're ALWAYS there, not just once in a great while.

How cool to hear about a guy that cares about his brother.
When I was younger, I was a lot like your brother. I didn't have the greatest older brother, but I do remember a few nice things he did for me. I was about 12 yrs old and had surgery that kept me at home for weeks. He took his truck up into the mountains and filled it with snow (we live in Los Angeles so snow isn't somerting we see unless we go way up to the mountains). Then, he backed his truck into the driveway and slammed on his brakes and made me a winterwonderland. I loved it and will never forget it.
Do something that shows you care. Bring him something he likes.
Also, my bro gave me some good advice when I was little and friendless, he said "Just be cool, be a good guy, and eventually you will have lots of friends." Which now I do, tons of them.

After he feels better take him out and do something together. Try and get him to join a club or volunteer there he will meet people and make friends. He just needs to get out and motivated to get his self esteem up.
