God never said there would be no suffering in this life. Just because it happens, doesn't mean he is not with you. Perhaps people don't realize how much worse off they would be if God WASN'T around. I suggest you look up and read the famous poem "Footprints", which deals directly with this topic.
On the other hand, don't forget we are all sinners and some of us deserve what we get (not all of course).
