Beer and wine use different varieties of yeasts. Typical beer yeasts die at around 3-8% alcohol/volume while typical wine yeasts die at around 10-15%. There are exceptions but general rules will help you get the idea. Also, while grains are generally used in beer and fruit in wine there are exceptions. Sake is a type of grain based wine (rice) and the belgians are famous for producing some fine barley wines. And, ciders are closer to beer than wine, depending on the region of origin. Some areas produce ciders with beer yeasts, while others use wine yeasts.
