Because tattooing is only now after so many years becoming a mainstream part of society. Unless youve been to a good shop, or seen the way thing are now they have no idea that instead of looking like chicken scratch they can have the moa lisa painted onto them. They simply do not know any better and are not interested in finding out. No one likes to be wrong! Notice how many people simply quote what they have been told their whole lives "convincts have them", well no not all of them do. People at auschwitz were forcibly tattooed, does that mean that they were convincts or anything else just cos they had to live with a tattoo? No, but exceptions dont exist according to most of them and try explaining that to a closed minded individual who can only parrot repeat what they have been told.

in regards to the low class, it is just as the above have pointed out, simple association. u see someone in a movie who is a tattooed criminal, u think theyre all criminal.

However, I believe there is a distinction in tattooing and you can have a lower class "tramp" tattoo. But that is a reflection on the person and not the art. Its partly the difference between a studio and a simple scratcher parlour. A lower class tramp tattoo is something low quality and probably hand poked as far as im concerned. A well designed and well done piece of art is very far away from that ideal and should never be referred to as anything but art. Again this stems from public ignorance that there is more out there than the thick outline simple style.

I often wonder the same thing. Although I don't have any tattoos myself, I've thought about it more than once - there just always seemed to be something more important to do with the money.
Both my daughters have tattoos, beautifully done, and I work with a number of people who have tribal tattoos (Samoan and Maori designs) which mean a great deal to them, and have much significance.

Maybe it (the stigma) stems from the "LOVE & HATE" prisoner stereotype - I just don't know. Judgemental people will always find something - I guess they have a need to hide their own inferiority complexes by criticising & categorizing others.

Personally I see tattoos as a form of self expression, an individual choice. If you have em, and you're happy having them, then all power to ya!

To those who cite "class" examples - please - Angelina Jolie, Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie among many, many more of the "social elite" would be fascinated to learn they are regarded as "lower class". LOL

Well I don't find them trashy, but some peoples tats do look a bit trashy, I mean I am all for getting tattoo's but I think people should be able to cover them up, for lets say job interviews.....because who wants to hire a person with tattoos on every inch of their body.

Hello to tattoo lover....I think of times when I was young UM MM about ( 40 Years ago )oh dear!!! that when I saw a Tattoo on people, it was low class, trashy "Like you said" Usually the Hells Angels where know for tattoos, people with a rotten attitude!!!! However today its a new generation....A tattoo is a way to say a statement, to be a individual, to decorate yourself with colorful images and designs that say " Hey, I'm here and I make life different:!!! Young sweet girls get tattoos and its acceptable as cute!!! So don't worry, your not judged by having tattoos But please consider.....when you grow old and you will, It just doesn't look very attractive on wrinkled 60 or 70 year old skin.So heres a thought for you to consider, live for today, or think about your tatto getting fadded out and wrinkled in the years to come!!! !! <<>> Ocean<<<>>>

Let's rephrase your statement...SOME people do think tattoos are trashy....BUT do we care what they think??? I don't!! A good amount of people often and usually associate tattoo's with the outlaw lifestyle...you know--hard-core biker gangs, ex-cons.....people who were trying to distinguish themselves from the crowd. I personally believe that in the last 15 to 20 years that tattoos are so common for the average person that the stereotype will change. But that too, takes time!!
When you break it all down...it is just another form of prejudice......and prejudice of any kind is bred by ignorance.
BTW....I have 6, I am a taxpayer, a non-criminal and a mother of 3.

some have the mistaken idea that their opinion counts in the grand scheme. not everyone is meant to wear a tattoo, but that still doesn't give anyone the "privilege" to decree who should or shouldn't wear them.

i remember this older guy railing on about how females shouldn't wear tats, and he went on about what whores they were. come to find out he was the problem, and i'd let it go at that. the insecure will always abound, and i suppose they feel taller or more significant when pointing out another's "faults".

I personally do not care that people think that. I know people do and I have heard it all about my tattoos and piercings, I just don't care.

I know who I am and where I stand, at this point, I'm the better person because my response is 'Have a nice day' and I just walk away and go about my business.

Some people will never change and those people will almost always end up the most miserable. Judgmental people aren't worth d*ck and that's that.

Associations are hard to shake -- tattoos are often associated with criminals. Watch any prison/gangster movie and more often than not there will be a lawbreaker covered in tattoos. It only takes one rotten apple to spoil the whole basket. It's like people discrimnating on the colour of skin and race; unless you can cover it up, people will judge what they see.

They don't see the artistic value in tattooing because it's not a traditional form of art like a painting or sculpture for example. Also the majority of tattoo artists and bearers of the art are not the elite of society thus the artform is related with lower class persons. People understand things by grouping them according to what they've experienced.
