The major difference is just in appearance, and the need of more grooming for the long haired ones.
Chihuahuas are some of my best friends!
It is hard to fathom how much love comes in those tiny packages!
Just put your own zip code here, and you will likely find your mom the perfect little Chihuahua! > http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=chihuahua&pet.Age=&pet.Size=S&pet.Sex=&location=98208&preview=1&scope=0&x=8&y=9

I raised Chihauhuas for many years. None of ours were yappy or nippy! All of them loved children..It is just a matter of gentle training..
Many Chi owners don''t make the effort to train these little guys, as they are a non threatening size, and they think the barking is cute..Well, little dogs need the same training as big dogs..That is why the toy dogs get a bad reputation..because so many have lazy or ignorant owners.

i have a long hair teacup chihuahua and actually a shorthair will shed more bc i long hair will jus grow and the short hair will not be able to keep growning so it falls out everywhere.. btw my chihuahua is the most loyal dog i have ever had also have an american bulldog and they get alng just fine. in the winter they may need a sweater if they go outside but it willl be the best dog she has ever had!!!

Chiuauas are great, but generally 1 owner dogs. They are very protective of their owner. Mine runs off the cats and other dogs I have, and only minds me. Shes my baby though. Long hairs are the cutest I think, but take more maintanance than a short hair cause youll have to comb it to keep away from a matted mess.

The difference is one has long hair, and one has short hair. They can be nippy, especially if they are spoiled and not treated like dogs. They also have a tendency toward bad knees, and most will need several dental cleanings in their lifetime. If you do get one, the larger ones tend to be healthier than the teacup variety. If they are trained and well-socialized, they are wonderful little dogs, but PLEASE treat it like a dog!

Fast heartbeat does not shorten life span, in fact, small dogs live much much longer than large ones (18 yrs vs 12 yrs, on average)

Sure they are great pets.. but they like alotta attention (someone thats there all the time) and they have a few inherant medical problems.. but nothing really major... and like most small animals thier life span is a little short due to hyper metabolism (heart beats faster quicker you die.. this applies to all animals even humans)

The difference between a long hair and a short hair? Umm one has long hair and the other dosen't

They are excellent companions and pets particularly for someone older... They are however YIPPY BARKY little mutts LOL

They can be really mean little dogs. We have had two and we had to becareful or they would try to bite us, and my friend's family has had several, and so has her family members. Only one of the sisters' dogs out of 10 of them, has been nice to everyone she meets. All the others try to bite because they are very territorial. They are a nervous dog and not good around children either. The thing that your mom will not be able not to do is over baby the dog and allow it to always sit with her. My uncle's 2 chihuahuas would try to bite anyone that would get close to him. That is what causes them to be agressive when someone else will get close to her. One of mine wouldn't let me get back in the bed if I got up at night to get a drink and go to the bathroom. I would have to throw a sheet over him to get in bed. He would jump at and try to bite my husband if he got near the bed.

They get very nippy. I'm not a fan. I'd try other little dog breeds. Or invest in some serious puppy school. They need to know you're the boss. Good luck

i don't know if there is a difference in personality but i would get the short hair because its not as messy. i've never owned one so i can't anser the other part of your question.

Personally, I hate the yappy little things and I think there's something wrong with people who view them as the latest 'must have' accessory.
Something like a collie or retriever, now that's different!
