but don't want my 'potential' boyfriend to know that I'm happy. Because I think it gives him a power over me and I can't seem to grasp that.

The happier you get, more chanches you will have with this potential boyfriend. If his "power" over you cames from emotional blackmailing, like "you seem happy why should i care about you ?" kinda of thing, than he is not worth it and you deserve better.

What a sophisticated question!

So you want to conceal your happiness from your potential boyfriend. That probably makes sense, at least until he's more than potential. But the effect will depend on his personality and history. He might feel that hiding your feelings is a turn-off.
