My brother brought me a hat from a Naval ship called the Niagara Falls. On it, the ship has the designation AFS-3. What does AFS stand for, and what does CV stand for in aircraft carriers? Help!

Niagara Falls is a Combat Stores Ship, now designated as a training ship and assigned to the Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force. AFS is the designation used for combat stores ships. The A is a designation for transport. Not sure what the F means, but the S most likely stands for stores.

CV is the classic designation for an aircraft carrier, but most carriers today are CVANs. C stands for carrier. V is for fixed wing aircraft. A is for attack and N is for nuclear. Of the carriers currently in commission, only USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) is non-nuclear.

<>AFS is a Fleet Stores (supply) ship (don't ask me what the "A" is for...maybe Auxiliary!). CV is Carrier Vessel; CV will be followed by another designation letter (CVL = Light Carrier, CVH = Helicopter Carrier, etc.)
