He gave me a card and said Happy Birthday and we went out later that night with some friends to celebrate...which is fine, that's all I want. I am just confused because he asked me several times before my birthday what I wanted for a gift. I always said "I don't need anything" and I don't. But why wouldn't he have said something like "I didn't get you a gift, but I've got your drinks tonight" or "I didn't have the money for a gift (he just bought a house so I would completely understand), but I can't wait to celebrate with you" or something! It was just kind of awkward there was no acknowledgement of the gift-giving tradition whatsoever, I don't know if I should ask him about it or not. What does everyone think?

Wow, please rethink your question.

He bought you a card and took you out with friends to celebrate.
You told him you didnt need anything.

Did you say thank you for the card and Thank him for celebrating your birthday with you?

Dont say a word to him... That would be rude and tacky.

Maybe he just didn't give you a gift because you said you didn't need anything and he took that as a serious answer. he thought you would feel bad if he didn't try so he tried by asking what you wanted, since you told him nothing then he took that seriously but still felt bad that's why he said he'd get your drinks. if you asked him you might make him feel bad and most likely his answer would be, "you told me you didn't need anything".

The fact that you're thinking so much about this means that you actually did want something, but wanted to play it off like you didn,t when you actually expected him to give you something. You should have just been honest with him from the beginning.

You can't tell him anything now, that would be selfish to do.

You are sending him mixed messages. He asked you what you wanted and you specifically told him that you did not need anything. Take it as a compliment because he obviously listened to you. If you wanted something why not say - dinner would be nice - or offer something like that rather then saying you do not want anything.

Guys are very literal. You said you didn't need anything, so he didn't get you anything. He did acknowledge the occasion by taking you out though. Next time tell him you like surprises, or spending time with him or going somewhere you've never been.

Because guys are very simple. If you told him you didnt need anything then alright he's not getting you anything. If you wanted something you should've told him.

I think he should dump you for being ungrateful.

My gf didn't get me anything for xmas... I don't care, we've been dating for years.

the rule that you should get someone something even if they say no is OK in my book, but you can't expect to be mad when he follows your advice.
