I'm convinced that this guy was teased and not very popular as a young adult, and now uses his intelligence to make other people feel stupid and very inferior. He is very impatient and has shown this, along with repremanding me, in front of patients a few times. Any tips on how to deal with these personality types? Other than that he's a nice guy ; P

And yes, if I worked for just him, I would absolutely find another job, but I work with 4 other wonderful Docs.

He's an a*sshole. Get another job. Remember though, no job is perfect. Whereever you go, there is bound to be at least one jerk who is going to ruin your day. Guarenteed.

I had a surgry, where there were two students present. I was under a local, so I heard everthing. The Doctor, was really rude, and demeaning to the first year student.
I think it was to make him a better dr in the future.
When the Dr repremended you in front of a patient, had you performed at 100%, was he answering a complaint from the patient??
A patient wants to know the Dr has control and is taking care of the problem and that the issue is important. Maybe it was for this, or maybe a little show for the patients confidence.
A doctor if out of line with his staff makes a poor impression on his patient, so maybe he had cause. If he was wrong, then you have to remember he is paying you at the end of the week and it is his office and his reputation.
I worked for a plastic surgeon with very little personality, I watched and learned. When I hired my staff at my small office, I knew how NOT to act towards other people, he taught me a lot.
By the way, I didn't work for him very long. I toke college classes at night and left for a great job, which really surprized him....Oh, you've been going to DePaul. He finally respected me as I gave my notice with quiet and a smile.
You can't change people, only yourself and how you react to them.

If he does it again, turn to him immediately and say, "Doctor, I need to speak to you outside for a moment." When he steps outside the room, tell him, "I do not appreciate your disrespect of me in front of the patients. It is undermining my credibility with the patients and increasing the chance that I could be sued. If you have a criticism to express to me, please do so away from the patients."
If he continues to disrespect you after you call his hand on it, I would quit. You have experience working in one medical office; you can find a job in another.

alot of dr's have this tendency b/c once theyve been in school so long its like no1 can be on thier level. if he's nice most of the time maybe u can approach him after he had reprimanded u and say u know u work 4 him but public criticism is kind of humiliating and it would be more beneficial to tell u in private where u can talk about it and work on fixing things to his liking. b/c when its dont in public ur more focused on being embarassed than what he's even talking about

Doesn't sound like much fun.
I would not descend to his level, and keep your dignity. Do your job well, and if it continues, speak to him privately about how it makes you feel and what in particular he is doing that is offensive. He may not even be aware he is doing it.
If this all fails, then perhaps you need to find another job.

Be up front and honest with him (in private), but be nice. Even if you don't want to. Two wrongs don't make a right and you want to rise above all that unpleasantness. But be straight forward. He'll never know if you don't tell him. He'll probably respect you for it.
