It could be a lot of things. I myself have been waking up with exactly the same description for the last 3 or 4 days, but I think I need more potassium (bananas) in my diet - particularly before bed time - and maybe some extra magnesium (blueberries) because I might be tensing my hands in my sleep.
Peace!

As mentioned , It could be Athiritis, in your fingers / joints of your fingers.
Could also be , If you use your fingers alot for any type of activity during the day. eg - typing.
Also , Is there a re occurence problem , or just every so often , It could be the way you possibly slept on your fingers / hand over night.
I would suggest, No matter what answer, and what responses you get on here, You always should go and check with a health professional , and go and see your Local G.P, is symptons persist.

Sorry about the pain, but I think you might suffer from old age. It happens to the best of us. Try taking one aspirin before you go to bed see what happens. Oh yea take a multi vitamin once a day as well. Really not much you can do other than visit a doctor, and that's an arm and a leg!
