The 429 engine definitely has more power than the 400 but it is fairly rare and would be expensive to come by. If you have one, you should be able to get a handsome price for it. If ever you want to know which engine is compatible to which vehicle, call one of the larger salvage yards in your area and give them the numbers of the engine and the vehicle. They have charts that will show crossover compatibility. Otherwise you are looking at hanging the engine on a hoist and having someone measure and fabricate motor mounts and brackets. Unless a speed shop can get you adaptor mounts.

The 429 is in the 385 series, it's the little brother to the 460, same block. You can swap the 429 in place of the 400, the bellhousing and motor mounts should line up without too much trouble. The 400 (335 series) is nowhere near in the same class as the 429, especially a CJ. That being said, the 400 can be built, and will stand up to a build OK. You have a great motor in the 429, one of the best, but it's worth some money to the right person, you may be further ahead to sell it, and use the profit to build your 400, properly built the 400 is all your truck will ever need.

Dude the 429 cj is WAY WAY WAY better than a stock 400. The 429 came out in the era where there was no smog restrictions. Choosing between a 429 and a 400 is like choosing between a 350 and 383 for chevy guys. The 429 and 383 are so much hotter and torquier than the 400 and 350. GL

Yes you can swap and the 429 is the better in my opinion . You will have to make a few modifications, like , the exaust, rear sump oil pan, and if standard shift the correct fly wheel or flex plate if auto, power steering pump bracket ( this will have to be changed or modified to fit) I think thats about it. I hope I havent forgotten anything.

It all depends who built it but the compression is higher on a Hemi and it will not last as long. I am a Ford guy so I would take the Big Block Blue oval Motor. Unless you were talking about a Big Blue Hemi which I doubt because they are very, very, rare and expensive. Dodge Sucks! They make good motors but it is almost 2007 and they Still can NOT build a good Tranny!

The 429 c.j. is worth way more than your whole truck. Yes you can swap it but I'd sell it to a mustang guy.
