I'm sure these figures exist as a lot of the correctional system is 'farmed out' to private companies nowadays, who have to have a cost basis for charging the State for their services. So, I will try and find out...

But if you're asking about Martha Stewart, well, she covered the cost with illicit bake-ins!

here are the recent figures for Washington State:

.... and some interesting discussion material from Texas as to why just looking at the cash cost isn't the full social picture:

last I heard it was $65,000 but it might have increased in the last year or so. Did you know that inmates live longer generally than the outside population...kinda interesting.

Think it cost 45 to 60 dollars a day to house one.

I've read it $ 65,000 to 75,000 a year. I don't think its right that someone in prison makes more than I do on the outside. One of lifes little injustices.

My last report of it was averaging $80,000 a year.
They must have a minimum of 2,200 calories a day, free health care, heat in the winter, air conditioning in the summer. Pretty damn good deal if you ask me!
I would call myself rich if I would live on $80,000 a year, no rent/mortgage, no utilities nor food bill, free medical care, and free college education!
Shame on you America!!!!!
