NO!!!
A large percentage already drive 10-15 miles over the speed limit and some seem to never look at their speedometer. If there is a gap in traffic they go faster, faster, faster, until they catch up to the cars in front. Then they can tailgate which seems to be their favorite pastime.
On the interstate they zip along using their radar detectors and their CB radios to learn where the radar is, then when they are past the cops they take off like a damn jet. I am sure you have seen them do it.
There seems to be a total lack of concern for the safety of others. Damn the icebergs, full speed ahead.
Two weeks ago I was driving south on I-39 from Westfield, WI toward Portage, WI. It was snowing a little and there were numerous cars passing me. I was driving 55 in a 65 zone because both lanes were snow covered and slippery. In that 25 mile stretch there were 10 different accidents involving three or more vehicles because someone had spun out into another lane and took out someone elses vehicle. Some of the offenders were pulling trailers with snowmobiles or quad tracks and had passed me only a few minutes earlier. There were three other individual vehicles that had gone off the road without an accident. ALL BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO DAMNED STUPID OR SELFISH TO DRIVE ACCORDING TO THE CONDITIONS.
That is why we have to maintain speed limits and law enforcement. There are idiots who can't or won't drive safely because when they sit down in their cars it puts too much pressure on their brains.
THEY HAVE THEIR BRAINS IN THEIR AZZ.

YES!!! ABSOLUTELY!!! BUT...
Drivers would need better training and the training should be so good that it is expensive to get a license. The license would have to be renewed annually with a strict test. The cars should also be equipped with breathalyzers requiring a breath test before the car starts, be built better like German cars to handle wrecks, cell phone use in a car would be outlawed punishable by a year in jail and a heavy fine, no more car stereos, no more cup holders, etc.
SO...
It would actually be expensive for all this in the long run making Americans complain. Americans are stupid in that regard, but elimination of the speed limit and doing what I said above would actually make the roads safer.
Of course there is no place on Earth with truly unlimited speeds. Even the Autobahn is limited in populated areas and in bad weather.
The problem here in the U.S. is that driving is not a privilege anymore in the minds of most. It is a right.

No. However, it's not the speed that kills. Look at Germany where the average highway speed is 125mph. Less accidents per capita over there! The difference? You must be 18 to get a license and driving school is mandatory. Very different driving behaviors over there which we can learn from.
Here's an example:
Someone in America comes up behind you and flashes his high beams. You get offended and slam on your brakes so that he can rear end you, or you flip him the finger. In Germany you get out of the way because the guy behind you is in a hurry. Actually, it's the law in Germany for you to get out of his way!
Anyway, getting rid of the speed limits over here will probably never happen because it's a revenue generator stemming from all of those speeding tickets we get. Furthermore, speed limits only cause more harm than good because we're all busy staring at our speedometers and looking out for cops hiding in the bushes with their ridiculous radar guns instead of paying attention to the road!

YES!!!! beacause it would finally bring back the GREAT process of natural selection by placing responsibility back in one's own hands which is what I think america needs very badly. bottom line you would probably see a huge rise in the death rate at first as all the idiots kill themselves by trying to make they're beater honda's go 125:) LOL but eventually people will realize where they're driving skill is and maintain a safe speed for it...probably the hardest transisition would be on the people who live by the speed limit since those people are also the people who drive in the left lane without passing any cars which in a unregulated state would become even more of a danger
IF YOUR NOT GOING FASTER THAN THE CAR TO YOUR RIGHT OR BEHIND YOU YOUR IN THE WRONG LANE AND CREATING A DANGEROUS SITUATION MOVE TO THE RIGHT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE!

The ones who drive safe now would drive safe at a faster pace. The morons who drive like morons now would drive like mega morons and kill the ones who drive safe.
For all you autobahners, I have recently read in an e-mail straight from Hechthaussen Germany, where my girlfriend of some 20 years ago lives with her family (she was an exchange student) and her husband is a street cop in Stade, that they are trying to implement speed limits on the bahn. She is a little upset to say the least. America is spilling over. They don't have high numbers of accidents but they do have a high fatality to accident ratio or something like that. When you crash you die is pretty much the gist of it.

Maybe on some roads. But I think the true answer is "no," as much as I hate to admit that. There are a lot of accidents caused by people losing control because they were driving too fast. So as much as I hate it, the speed limit is a good thing.

what do you mean 'still'? americans can't even drive safely at 65! the autobahn works in places like germany because they are very well-trained and disciplined drivers... the number-one cause of accidents on the autobahn in germany is american drivers. on the other hand, italians drive like psycho-paths on the autostrasse, and get themselves into fatal accidents all the time. we, americans would be much more likely to follow the lead of the italians. so... no, americans most certainly cannot handle freedom to drive without a speed limit.

People who drive the autobahn have respect for it and other drivers. People in the states...they don't respect the road ways now, they don't respect other drivers...why would they respect no speed limits. Heck, most of them ignore the speed limit anyway, and they still don't drive safe.

Yes they would, because Law enforcement will have to keep a
close watch on the new no-speed limit freeways, & all motorists will have to keep their vehicles in top notch condition, we might lose a few more lives at those speeds, but commute times will be cut in half, and, trafffic jams wil be almost non-exsistent.
But safety will be a big issue on this. And street racers will definetly want to take advantage of the freeways, but they will have to be dealt with by the cops.
I'm all in favor for faster freeways, though, it's a great idea.
