I would have loved to have lived in an era where it was relativley peaceful on earth? I know it sounds corny but every Christmas I watch all the old Christmas movies and wish I could have lived in that time period as many do I'm sure. (yes, I know it is just a movie but the world just seemed a better place) Anyone agree? Disagree?

Interesting people say that the world has ALWAYS been as viloent and hateful as it is today. For some reason or another I tend to disagree...

Sorry, but you are looking back through time through rose tinted glasses. The world has never been better than it is now.

A few hundred years ago there was rampant slavery, torture and early mortality. People who lived to be 40 were considered old.

In the 1900s we had two of the biggest and most horrific wars in human history. In the 40s we were involved in WW2.

In the 50s we were just recovering from the horror of WW2. Many countries still had rationing.

In the 60s women were still blatantly discriminated against.

In the 70s there was still plenty of racism and sexism.

In the 80s there was a cold war and poor people were screwed over by Regan politics.

In the 90s there was relative peace.

In 2001 we had the worst terror attack in American history and then Bush plunged us into six years of war and conflict pretending it was a war on terrorism.

In all seriousness I wonder when this golden era was that you long for. I suspect it never really existed.

But, how would you survive without Y!A?

Christmas movies are hardly an indicator of what an era is like. I'm sure that previous years had violence and hate, too. For instance, being half-Jewish and of German descent, I don't think the 40's would have been a good place for me. The 50's wouldn't have been good - you know, because of bee-hives and poodle skirts, the 60's are out - hippies kind of creep me out, can't do the 70's because even though there was great classic rock, disco gives me the hives. I like living now. There is so much going on that I never get bored.

There has been violence through out all of man kind one empire conquering another or whatever the case,But I agree with you it seems so violent and nobody truely seems to be at peace because it is always in our face. The TV newspapers, magazines, movies, video games. There is so much noise and activity that we rarely get a break from it. I think what we really truely lack is inner peace, people don't take enough time to disconnect from the noise.I some time think it would've been nice to live in an age without TV.

Actualy for a Westerner this is one of the safest times to live in!
2 things make it seem worse...
1. The media lets you know about all of the bad stuff and
2. there are a LOT more people these days! the worlds population is far greater than it has ever been!

I think that's naive thinking. The movies always look idyllic. The reality is that there was never a peaceful time. People are violent animals on a fundemental level. In thousands of years nothing has changed. We still wage wars, and torture people. There are still murderers and rapists. Hate and intolerance still run rampant.

The real difference these days is that our media has gotten so good at reporting it. So you see more of it. Before we had news coverage, the crime and war were still there, people just weren't as aware of it unless it was happening right beside them.

With each new gain in society, we must give up something. So it is an even trade. Things aren't getting worse, just more televised. It's all in your perception and point of view. While I might have enjoyed knowing my neighbors better, I couldn't give up the internet or advances in medicine.

Simple to answer this...Christians are placing their faith in God (if there is one) and what has this gotten them? As you say our world has gotten progressively worse...because the Christians are waiting to be saved, the Jews have already been saved, and the Muslims don't give a damn. The placement of faith in God isn't the answer. Stepping up to the plate for a better world and the betterment of humanity is. Have faith in your fellow humans. PEACE!

Times are getting worse because it is getting closer to time for the second comming of Jesus. The more bad things there are the closer the second comming is.
