You have to first look and see if the gel has any alcohol in it. Many gels that have alcohol in it can cause it. How are you using the gel in your hair? If you are applying the gel directly on your scalp then yes it can cause for you to flake and look like you have dandruff. Also try to not cake it on like a lot of men do. Putting on too much gel especially on your scalp can clog up your hair follicles as well. Remember that the less chemicals that you put in your hair the more healthy your hair will be.

It does not directly cause dandruff, no. Dandruff is the flaking of the scalp, and when using hair gel [most brands at least], the only flakes you're getting have been caused by the gel drying out and falling off, so it's not dandruff technically. Try looking for brands that advertise as 'flake-free.' Good luck.

Dandruff is caused by excessive OILS FROM THE SCALP. I print this large because it cannot be caused by hair gel, which has alchohol in it to help it dry. If your scalp is producing too much oil, you can develope dandruff. Gel can dry your scalp, causing dry scalp. Does ANYONE remember cosmetology??? I'm sorry, but I get ticked that people give misinformation because they do not remember the basics!
Hair gel can flake, because it drys eventually, the flakes come off if you use too much. Dandruff is yellowish , oily flakes. Dry scalp is white flakes. Too much gel gel is white, clumpy flakes OF GEL! Don't let anyone mislead you. If nothing else, your gel will make your scalp dry out more! Hope this helps!

Dandruff can be an allergic reaction to hair products for some people. Dandruff is defined as the excessive shedding of skin from the scalp. Some people are more susceptible to it and some people get it as an allergic reaction.
