Hawaii's main business or industry if you will is the tourist trade so yes it is more expensive in Hawaii. But here is a trick get away from the areas frequented by the tourist and you will find things a lot cheaper. On other words don't go where the tourist go. Go where the locals go.

Well, the foods aren't that much more expensive in Honolulu on Oahu than other states, but there are probably less selections of restaurants in Hawaii than other states. I thought the foods in Honolulu cost about the same, but still there aren't as many different stores you can shop for compared to the mainland. Some restaurants and stores found on the mainland can't be found in Hawaii such as Olive Garden, Dilliard's, Burlington Coat Factory, and so forth.. So, there are less selections of restaurants and stores in Hawaii than on the Mainland. Housing is expensive like San Francisco and Los Angeles but the housing is probably more limited in Hawaii and there are a lot fewer selections in Hawaii than other places.

Hawaii is no different than anywhere else. If you live in the city you rent will be higher than a small town just lke anywhere else. groceries are more but its shipped in and then it depends on what you want to eat. but the cost of living is higher so the pay rates are higher. I had a friend that could make enough in tips in one week to pay her rent for a month, personality helps, but tourist towns are every where. So not everything is more expensive. Everything is expensive everywhere!

I assume that most people who say that it's about the same as other places only came to Oahu. If you live on the neighbor islands, you'd beg to differ. We already pay the most for gas, but it's at least 10-20 cents higher on the outer islands because of additional shipping charges. In 2004, gas was almost $3 a gallon on Molokai.
On Oahu, you're lucky if $700,000 gets you a house. That price is constantly going up, and ironically, I think it's because of our tourism industry. People come to Hawaii, fall in love with it, want to a buy place here, and they get it, therefore buying limited land and increasing property values, making it even more difficult for the people who actually live and work here.

first off - isnt the name beth awesome? lol :)

but yes i went there this past summer and it was pretty expensive. we had five people go and it was nothing for us to have to pay $150 -$175 a night for a meal, granted we didnt eat fast food because hey we are on vacation, but also a gallon of milk over there no joke is $6.00. i think it just depends on what you buy and where you buy it at. if you can keep from it dont buy anything from the ABC stores because they are expensive...they do have walmart and it is alot cheaper.

In relation to what? It's about the same as San Francisco or Hong Kong. Things that they have to boat in are more expensive like gasoline, but about the same as where I'm from.
