I'm the older one, and I have one younger sister. The thing is, we have a completely different characteristics. For example, she likes to listen to rock/rap music while I like to listen to classical/pop. Plus, she doesn't mind if the room was dirty, while I care (although not to a point where I'm a perfectionist)...
Anyway, the list goes on and on. The thing is, we're five years apart, and we don't talk much. My mom keeps complaining that's not the way siblings are suppose to be behaving, but we just don't get along with each other! We each get frustrated by the other one's personality...Is it normal? Or is it because of the age difference?
I would be interested to hear from people who have a sibling with different personalities; some years apart; OR same gender as your sibling.

i think it's somewhat normal. i'm NOT the oldest. i am the youngest & my brother & i are NOTHING alike. we don't even like each other. i refer to him more commonly as " my mother's son" and NOT my brother. i believe it also has a lot to do w/ your upbringing

Well my sister is 6 years older than me. And we are complete opposites. She is always in trouble and has a kid and is not married and listens to spanish music and the list goes on...
its normal...you're sibling and see eachother all the time...my sister and i were like that all growing up and fought a lot but i feel as you get older and move from tham you can start to deal with them more and more....

My sister is 6 years older than me. She is dark, I have fair hair and fair skin. She is into books, gardening and is very shy. I am outgoing, bubbly, love to party. We never got along whilst we were still living at home. It is only the last few years (+-5) that we have become close. I guess all life's knocks brought us closer. Now she is my BEST friend in the world! I guess as you get older, all the silly stuff you used to fight about just doesn't seem important anymore. Hand in there. You will eventually have a great relationship with your sister too.

I've got the same thing with my brother. I always told my mom that he was an alien sent here from outer space because there is just no way we could have the same DNA. He is really, really weird and I am so totally normal. We have absolutely nothing in common and he don't really talk anymore. Sometimes, that just happens in families.

My brother is 24 years younger than I. I did well in school, graduated college and went to graduate school. He dropped out of college twice in his first term. Never went back. I had two careers. He has never worked a real job. I was a workaholic until I became disabled with rheumatoid arthritis and severe back problems at 55. He is lazy to the bone. He doesn't work and never will work.

My sister is 5 years older than me and we couldn't be more different. That being said she is still my closest friend and we have a great relationship. You should make an attempt to be at least social with your sister because family is important.

Just because you're siblings doesn't mean you and your sister are going to have the same personalities. That's ridiculous for anyone to think that you and her should. My siblings and I are all different, that's what makes us unique.

My sister and I are as different as night and day. She is 5 years older than me, and we grew up in the same household, learning the same rights and wrongs. She chose wrongs, I chose rights. Don't let your mom get to you. She will soon realize you guys are just different.
