Just do the math.

640 x 480 = 307,200 pixels = very small picture, suited for e-mail
1600 x 1200 = 1.92 megapixels = rather small picture, suited for medium print, like 5x7
3072 x 2304 = 7.1 MP (approx) = nice size, suited for most anything less than poster sized
