In the alternative medicine model of disease, our IMMUNE SYSTEMS become weakened by poor nutrition, lack of exercise and reduced oxygen. Once that happens, our body becomes vulnerable to common STRESSORS. Stressors can be environmental, like viruses, heavy metals, pesticides, food additives, electromagnetic waves or pollution. They can be internal things like emotional or job stress, or poisonous people in our lives. Aging is also a contributing factor. So this means:
WEAK IMMUNE SYSTEM + STRESSORS = DISEASE (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc.)
Our bodies have 60 trillion--yes, trillion--cells, and there are always some mutating into cancer cells, but a healthy immune system kills them before they have a chance to get a foothold in the body.

Actually we all produce cells each day that are potentially cancerous. The question could be why don't we all get cancer?
Abnormal cells are produced by the body all the time which could potentially produce disease. The body's immune system regularly recognises, detects and destroys them.
All systems are imperfect and occasionally one cell slips through the net and begins to divide in an uncontrolled way.
The risk increases if the immune system is either immature or aged, both of which make it less efficient or if it is running under par because of disease or occasionally medication.
There is also more risk in area where the immune system is less active.
Anything that increases the numbers of abnormal cells increases the risk that cells will be missed. These things are called 'carcinogens'.
They may be radiation, which includes sunlight, chemical toxins, which includes cigarette smoke and even some foods. ( Oil used by the Japanese for cooking increases stomach cancers!)
Some tumours are caused by viruses these include cervical cancer , which is why an antiviral vaccine has recently been release to stop women getting the HPV virus, and leukaemia's some of which are also viral induced.

All cancer begins when a cell divides, and the new cell has a damage in the DNA strands. That damaged cell continues to divide making more damaged cells until they form a group large enough to cause problems (a tumor for example). Their function mutates into survival of the tumor instead of the original function of the cell when it was normal tissue.
Most of the time, when a cell divides and has damage, the cell dies (or self destructs) and doesn't replicate itself. The big questions in cancer research are what causes some of them to continue dividing and mutating into a new function, and what causes some to be more agressive and invasive than others. It is certainly a factor that foreign substances increase the likelyhood of poor division (smoke and chemicals, for example). As far as your suggestion of stress or tiredness as a cause..probably not impossible, but highly unlikely that they would cause a cancer, however they can contribute to other equally serious illnesses.
In cancers that are familial, or "inherited", the DNA in that family is more likely to either divide poorly, or less likely to self distruct because it divided poorly. Inherited cancers are less than 10% of all cancers....more than 90% just happen on their own.
Hope that helps you understand it a little better!

Cancer consists of mutated cells that rapidly divide. Obesity, poor lifestyle choices, overexposure of UV rays, smoking, etc. are thought to increase one's susceptibility to cancer. However, the cause is not known, and when I developed cancer I was a happy, fit, teenager who did not have any of the above risks.

Cancer can be caused by many things, expose to sun rays, radiation, just about everything has the chance to create cancer cells..

damaged cells. Different cells get damaged in different ways: for instance, lung cells get damaged from smoke; skin cells get damaged from UV rays; liver cells get damaged from ingested toxins; cervical cells get damaged from HPV virus. BUT scientists still do not know all the causes of cancer. It can be a combination of environmental exposure, lifestyle choices and genetics or just one of those too.

Nobody really knows for sure. Anybody is exposed to cancer. Therefor it is very important that your immune system is working properly.
