The number six hundred sixty six, not six-six-six, is the result of a simple math equation. It comes from Revelation 13:18 --

"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."

In Hebrew and Greek, the letters have numerical value, much the same as our more familiar Roman numerals. These two languages are considered the original languages of the Bible texts. Any word in either language has a numerical value based on the letters in the word. Simply add the letter values together to find the value. The study of this type of thing is called "gematria." The prophet here is telling the reader that the name of the man, whom he refers to as "the beast", will have a gematrical value of six hundred sixty six.

Suppose you took the English alphabet and assigned a number value to each letter- for example a=1, b=2, c=3, y=25, z=26, etc. The name Joe would have a value of 30. Bill would be 35.

So, the answer to the question is this: the person who believes that 666 means something is either the person that believes that the Bible is inspired by a God that means what He said, or the person that believes in superstitious junk put forth by those who have no understanding of the Bible.

It was a marking system that the Romans used. The word mark in Revelations is from charagma [caragma]. A charagma is a stamp or a badge or an imprinted mark. It is from the word charax from charasso (to sharpen to a point). A charax is a pole or stake, a palisade.

The mark of the beast is about who owns your service, your labor, your estate. You are the package. It is about your allegiance, your service, your faith and trust. The Bible says not to accept this mark because you should belong to God.
