i'm currently in a university (have been for a few years now), but this semester, i have found it really hard to sleep. i'm just not sleeping at night, and during the days sometimes i'll get pretty sleepy. i think i've only had 1 or 2 good nights of rest. i'm taking the same amount of credits that i took last sem, so it's not like i'm used to be underworked or overworked. but i just haven't been as motivated either. what may be causing this, and what can i do to get better sleep, other than taking sleeping pills?

Melatonin is an over-the-counter supplement, found in the vitamin aisle of most supermarkets, pharmacies, and Walmart. It helps people sleep--even those with jet-lag, and those who work rotating shifts.
Use lavender shampoo, soaps, body sprays, candles, incense, even cleaning products and laundry products (not all at once, please). Lavender is very relaxing, and may help you to get to sleep.
Chamomile Tea is also relaxing, and may help you to sleep.
SleepyTime Tea, or SleepyTime Extra Tea with Valerian also helps you to relax and sleep (don't use Valerian if you are using Melatonin).
Be sure to get plenty of fresh air and exercise in the daytime. Don't drink any caffeine after lunchtime. Learn to practice meditation, and check out Yoga.
A warm bath an hour before you plan to sleep can help, as can warm milk.

Ah. Warm milk is the poison for me. Try not over-analyzing while you're in bed about to go to sleep. Get in a comfortable position and think about something relaxing that will put your mind at ease. Try not to 'overwork' your body by pinching your eyes shut or anything. You must be relaxed. For me when I go to sleep everything must be perfect... Or at least my bedroom. I can't go to sleep without the room I'm sleeping in to be dirty or something... That may be the case with you. Any new boys(/girls) in your life that may be causing you to think so much? Blah blah. You know all that. Stretching or doing some kind of light workout warms your body a bit which is a bit more comfortable for me. But yeah...
Try to stay away from any sleeping pills because they all have some sort of risk of dependancy and you probably won't want that.

The absolute best cure is either a cup of warm water or a cup of warm milk.
Try putting on a radio with soft music as well and make sure the room is in total darkness but the milk will calm you down.

Dont take any intake of caffine for a day, and drink a glass of milk before sleep... It helps me xD... success rate 90%... And try to clear your mind when sleeping. If none of that helps... Get some yoga classes... Friend said they go through excercises that look painful but it isnt and realaxes your mind to save energy etc, and better night sleep =|

Maybe your thinking too much at night and your not realizing that its a form of stress for you. Is there something new that is occurring in your life? Are u worried about something? These are just questions to ask yourself.
I "read" when I cant sleep, for some reason it makes me tired when I do it at bedtime.
Hope this helped. Good Luck.

Cut out caffeine after 5 or 6 pm, try taking a daily walk to help your body and mind relax.

Try doing Yoga right before bed, it relaxes your body, and allows you to fall asleep faster.
Also try drinking warm tea, or milk before you go to bed, its supposed to help.
Also, try not to use the computer, or watch tv when you want to fall asleep, because it stimulates your brain.
