plain ambien is NOT a time released pill. You can cut it. Ambien CR is time released but they are round, you probably wouldn't be able to cut those into 1/4s. If your body/brain is not use to taking hypnotic drugs like that, then the 2.5 may work for you. However it has a fairly high risk of dependence, meaning if you use them for an extended period of time, it may come to the point where you can't sleep without them. It's only meant to be taken for about a week of continuous use and if you find that you need them every night, there's probably something else going on. you need to talk to your doctor to keep from becoming dependent on these.

By the way, if you're not sure, the 10mg is white and the 5mg is pink. Both are tiny oval shaped pills.

Ambien is addictive; but seroquel (an antipsychotic) is far more dangerous. All the antipsychotics can cause in certain cases permanent nerve damage known as tardive dyskenesia. One other option is Trazadone. It is an antidepressant that is fairly safe and that makes you sleepy. They never ended up using it as an antidepressant because the effective dose would make the person taking it very drowsy. But, it will put you to sleep. The only problem I've had with it, is grogginess in the morning. It's possible that that wears off the longer you use it.

If 2.5 works, cut the pill. The usual dose is 5 or 10. In some people however, the side effect is unpleasant --- short term memory loss. You may not experience it, but I found after a year on it, that things were just tooooo foggy, and I had to concentrate too hard. Others have had no such experiences.... After awhile, even 10 didn't work, so I just stopped, and did other things --- warm milk, no chocolate, coffee, or tea after 2p, ate dinner earlier, like 6 rather than 8:30, nice warm bath, and reading something not too demanding.

I would try not to take it every night if at all possible. My doctor told me to cut my ambien pills in halfs and quarters also, so it is safe to cut the pill. I did not have much luck with it because it makes me too groggy (even the 2.5), so my doctor told me to purchase an over the counter supplement called Melatonin. You can get it at almost all drug stores, and it is not at all expensive. It helps me sleep better than the ambien, and it does not leave me with a sleeping pill hangover.

Ambien is short-acting, the half-life is 2- 3 hours whereas clonaepam is long-acting with a half-life of 18-50 hours. Increased drowsiness is both a short-term and long-term effect of the use of Ambien. In people taking the drug over prolonged periods of time, drowsiness may occur throughout the day and make it difficult for users to perform daily activities. Tasks such as driving or working may be dangerous. Symptoms of the drug may carry over from the previous evening's administration. This is especially true for people taking high doses of the medication.

I don't like the seroquel stuff either. Ambien kept me awake. Lately the docs use seizure or epilepsy meds to quiet the chatter. Also be aware that it (Seroquel) has the potential to make you a diabetic because it makes you crave everything sugary besides making you fat. I would also recommend that you pray nightly when you go to bed. I say the Rosary and all the prayers make me fall asleep! Lots of exercise will also reward you with feelings of well being and make you tired enough to go to sleep. Good luck kiddo, DrB

Some people can take 1/4. If that works great. I wish 1/4 worked for me.No doubt that you will need more down the road and if you want to call something that works and does what it's suppose to do an addiction than yes it's addictive. I can't sleep without them.Too bad they don't sell them over the counter.
Why would they.Their good.

No it's not unhealthy at such a low dosage. My question is 2.5 mg enough to do the job?

Why cut it? Why not take the whole thing. Some pills are not made to be "cut", especially Ambien. Ambien is a time released pill & should only be take whole. Please consult your pharmacist.
