For instance, if you get a virus and it deletes some of your OS file and the OS becomes corrupt, could that back up you made help you restore those files?

If not, what is it good for?

if you are on 2000/XP and you have a backup of your i386 folder, you can always reinstall from there.

if you have backup software and do a FULL monthly backup and then a daily or weekly INCREMENTAL backup, you can always do a restore from there.

if you have XP set to take snapshots of your system for System Restore, you always have that as an option.

There is no reason for you to get a virus in this day and age. There are many FREE anti-virus packages out there that work just as good as the expensive ones. AVAST and AVG work great and cost absolutely nothing. Other free tools that you shouldn't be without are Microsoft Defender, Spybot - Search & Destroy and Ad Aware... All are FREE. You can get most of them at C|net's Download.com (http://www.download.com)

Why back up the entire hard disk? You'd need many, many CDs or quite a few DVDs. With Windows backup you can just backup "System State", which is your resistry and some other important Windows system files. You can also select folder or files to include in the backup. Just backup your important personal data and "System State" You can always get your Windows XP disk out and do a "Repair" install of XP if you need to restore all the OS system files.

No, OS can only properly run by installing it again, not backing the files and copying it again on the same location or same directories it was before. OS are need to be configure on all drives and registry entry.

Just reformat and reinstall your PC, it's the best advice i can offer.

Yes but you will be restoring the whole system to the status it had when the backup was made. No file comparison exists here.

If you have music or movies or other documents you can restore them from a backup.
