I've known this guy for a while through a school sport, and now that it's ending, we can't hang out unless we get each other's phone numbers and hang out outside of school and sports. How should i ask him without seeming like I want to date him?

Just say on the last day in an off-hand kind of -take it or leave it I don't really care (even though you do manner)- "Hey its been fun playing lacrosse with you, maybe we should hang out". Its the subtley with which you do it that will determine whether it comes across as a come on or not. After you have said that its up to him. I'm pretty sure that if he's interested he will spring into action and get your number. Don't get his contacts. Girls never need to, you have to give him the thrill of the chase right. Plus its way better receiving calls than having to make them.

Maybe you could just be like "Hey, I think that we should hang out some time and play [name of sport here] together. That will be fun. Do you want to?" And if he says yes then be like "Great! Can i have your phone number or e-mail so I can get a hold of you?"
Something like that. Just make it sound casual, just like when you usually talk to him

It sounds like the one thing that you have in common right now is that sport. Use that as a total excuse, at least at first, see where things go later. I don't like to call guys, it sometimes looks desperate. Give him your number and tell him to call you to practice, talk, watch, whatever about your sport. If he calls, you'll already know he's somewhat interested in you. If he doesn't call, at least you'll know and can move on. Good luck.

The easy part is to ask him if he wanted to do something with you, and then ask him to give you his cell so you can decide later. For example: "Have you been to that sushi place? We should go this weekend! What's your number, I'll call you Saturday to figure out a time." It's easy, even if he isn't interested, he'll be flattered, and it's a pretty low key way to see if he wants to pursue something with you.

Tell him that he's a cool guy and a good friend and you would love to hang out sometime. Then ask if you can call him sometime

say something like, it isn't often when I get to met cool people that likes the same things as I do, so if it would be ok with you, I would like to hang out & play after school. Then if he says that sounds cool, say, well let me get your #, & we'll hang out after school sometime this week or something.

Don't ever ask someone for there phone number. It looks desperate. Give them yours and say something like "Give me a call some time."

Don't make it seem like your next breath is dependent on it!

GL!
