You do not need a passport just yet, but you do need your birth certificate and a form of picture id. But the birth certificate is the most important piece of id to have when crossing the border.

It is my understanding that you only need a passport to enter the States if you are flying in. To just cross the border you will need your birth certificate and gov't issued photo ID (BC ID or drivers license)
I tried crossing the border into Montana, and they gave me a hard time because I didn't have my birth certificate.

you do not need a passport. the only way you would need a passport is if you would fly in to the united states. your fine if you drive. only your B.C. ID is all you need. I know because i called my local courthouse to ask them about it, since I am traveling to canada from the US for spring break this year.
