The christians who believe it as a literal place are refering to the biblical description of a lake of fire. The other christians who believe it as a separation from their deity have no direct biblical verses to back up their speculation.

In both cases, they are beliefs. One based on some book that has many contradictions. The other based on the new age interpretation that would be more palatable to potential converts.
Neither have any evidence to support hell exists.

Read the Bible, its a must. Hell is horor and pain. It is appozing to the soul, that is why it is referd to as fire. Take a lighter place it under the palm of your hand multiply this by an astronomical number. People reap what they sew also. This means that the pains that people cause are spiritualy gatherd and sewn into their soul, Phisical and spiritual, also it can be seven fold our what ever is decread depending on their judgment. Also jesus describes fire worms crawling threw the soul, also weeping and nashing of teeth, They use to give people a stick in their mouth when no anastetic was available for people getting their limbs cut of. Am i ruining your day yet, its the truth, Their are differnt places of punishment, Hell, Hades, Death, Abyss "were fallen angels are cast", place of burning sulpher. Their is also the sea of life, I believe that is the place were people wait in a state of slumber for the resurection. The final judgement is the lake of fire. Death and Hades and possibly other places give up the dead that were in them for judgment, then are cast in to the Lake of fire. This is magnifying the pain even more. Then those found wanting are thrown with the Devil Beast and false prophet and their minions into the lake that burns with fire. God is not happy with those who receive the spiritual mark 666 and the warnings are being given to their secret underworld society, turn or burn.If you want the parables that explain this the wheat and the weeds, weeds are placed in bundles, then are placed into lake of fire. So judgments are taking place already. I was salted with fire. Thats how I no. Believe it or not. its up to you.

Are you concerned about going there? Hell is a literal, eternal place. Whether the flames of hell spoken of in the Bible are literal or figurative, I don't know (and I don't plan on finding out). Hell is eternal separation from God, and a place to be avoided.
The good news is, God doesn't want anyone to go there. You can avoid hell by repenting of your sins and accepting what Christ has done for you.

Hell will be AS fire and brimstone, not literally a physical torture. Only those assigned to this abode for the eternities will know for sure, but LDS scripture reveal that the wicked will suffer continually from the evil perpetuated and retained in their minds, knowing their sins had engulfed them in mortality and chose not to do anything about it.

What's more, they will be severed completely from the light of Christ and God the Father.

It's not a literal place.

Revelations:

20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The death spoken of in verse 14 is Adamic death, which claimed the whole race for the sin of their father, Adam. Death is the penalty which was place upon Adam for his disobedience. God did not say that in the day Adam sinned he would burn forever. No, He said that Adam would indeed die.

If there is to be a second, it implies that there has been a first. Not only so, but the second must be like or similar to the first, or it would not be a second. Adamic death is that which our Saviour came to destroy.

The word hell in verse 14 is from the Greek word hades, the grave or oblivion. Both Death, Adamic death and Hell, the grave, will be thrown into the lake of fire.

Most Bible scholars today admit that the book of Revelation is highly symbolic. Fire is considered a symbol of complete destruction. Therefore, if death and hell and all who continue to rebel against God are cast into this symbolic fire, this would mean utter destruction for eternity. These are the willfully wicked and not the merely ignorant, mislead, blinded or deceived. The grave will be no more, and the Adamic death will be no more.

1 Cor. 15:26 states: "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." This is the death which passed upon all through Adam. The second death will always be possible, because once someone is given an opportunity to learn righteousness and they still choose to disobey, they will die of their own choice.

Jer. 31:29 speaks of this time. "In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge. But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge."

When full opportunity is offered to each individual, although Adamic weaknesses shall be upon them, their death will not be counted as being a part of Adamic death, but as being a part of the second death because their failure to make progress will be the result of their own willfulness, and not that of Adam.

The "Lake of fire" is referring to fires that kept burning in the Valley of Hinnom (Gehenna) for the destruction of offal and the prevention of contagion. Into this fire the carcasses of malicious evildoers might be thrown for destruction. It thus symbolized the second death. Nothing was tormented in the fire of the valley of Hinnom.

HELL IN KJV
One Hebrew word “sheol” is rendered hell. Definition; hades or the world of the dead (as if a subterranian retreat), grave, hell, pit. Three Greek words are rendered hell; geenna, hades, and tartaroo. Definition of geenna; a valley of Jerusalem, used (figuratively) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment: - hell. Definition of hades; properly unseen, that is, “Hades” or the place (state) of departed souls: - grave, hell. Definition of tartaroo; (the deepest abyss of Hades); to incarcerate in eternal torment: - cast down to hell. Tartaroo is used only one place II Pet.2:4.
Christ teaching the Pharisees in Luke 16:19-31 shows us a separation from God is truly what hell is. The “water” is symbolic for God’s Spirit and love. The word “tormented” means distressed in the Greek, not torture. The “fire” is symbolic for the shame and desire not to be separated from God.
So all who die the first death of the flesh return to God Ecc.12:6-7, but on which side of the gulf do they end up?
Hell is not eternal but is done away with in Rev.20:14-15, called both the second death and lake of fire. This second death is non-existence, for death and hell and those not written in the book of life. This second death or lake of fire is like fat drippings that fall into the fire. Just a poof of smoke into non-existence.
Psa.37:20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.
In my mind what’s worse yet is no memory of you, no tears will be shed for you like you never existed.
Rev.21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
So hell is a separation from God and is not eternal torture or burning. Eventually hell will be done away with or passed away and also some souls. Like fat drippings in the fire, a poof of smoke into non-existence, the second death.

My understanding is thay Gnostic Christians taught it was a philosophy of being seperated from God but the more literal crowd (that evolved into the Catholic Church) taught that it was a lake of fire.
