I have a recipe that needs buttermilk powder, it is for a dressing.

Does anyone know what buttermilk powder is, where can i get it, is there a substitute.

The supermarkets dont seem to stock it.

Buttermilk powder is real dehydrated buttermilk usually found in the Organic section of your grocery store. You can use regular buttermilk, just look for what liquids are used to reconstitue the powder. Here's another thought, Hiddden Valley Ranch has a buttermilk dressing mix that you could use a little in regular milk to simulate buttermilk

Buttermilk is what’s left over after the butter has been scooped off the top in the butter making process. Usually with a fleck or two of butter floating on the top that failed to get removed, buttermilk is then further processed by culturing it at around 69 degrees F for 12 to 14 hours which gives it it’s distinctive, tangy taste. Slightly thicker than milk, cultured buttermilk has a unique flavor all it’s own that many people like to drink after it’s been well chilled. People with ulcers or other stomach problems have been drinking small quantities of buttermilk for years. It coats the stomach and brings instant relief.

The supermarkets around my area (Pennsylvania) have it. It's dehydrated buttermilk, just like regular powdered milk only from buttermilk.

If you can't find it with in the same area as the powdered milk (like Carnation), try the link below. King Arthur Flour has buttermilk powder which you can buy on-line.

I just needed this myself. I found it in the same isle as Powdered milk. And yes there is a substitute. Just add a tiny amount of vinegar to regular milk. The goal is to make it go "sour".
