The opening and closing camands are in Korean, and yes we do have to learn to count to 10 in Korean. But why make it a fight?

The ATA is the worst McDojang chain going. First you have their unscrupulous business practices, like the iron clad contracts, hidden testing fees, outrageous testing fees, and other hidden costs. That is not even taking into consideration the very poor quality of what they "call" Taekwondo. ATA is the only large TKD organization that is NOT recognized by the Korean Government. They are not the best at anything except ripping people off. You can find the horror stories all over the net about people that were ripped off ny the ATA. Granted all styles / Associations have a few bad schools, I have yet to hear of a quality ATA school anywhere. Yes Kevin I know you say the one you go to is awesome however I also checked out the other school that you are comparing to the ATA school. I would swear that it is an ATA school too, complete with the little sayings that "explain the colors of the belt" I would bet that they also have a little poem like the "song of Songham" for the ATA. WTF is strictly the olympic sport, ITF is more self defense oriented. No I have not attended an ATA school, I have worked out at a couple and they were a complete joke! Their black belts would not make a yellow belt in a good school. The form they used was horrendous, throwing side kicks with their toes pointing toward the ceiling, no balance, nothing worth while.

When I was studying TKD there were no orange or purple belts in the TKD ranking system!

I studied in the USA and was a member of the International Taekwon Do Federation.

Hmmm... different association and a different ranking system...
Must be either a different set of standards or that the ATA schools didn't quite meet ITF standards. Then again... it could just be that the person who ran my dojo learned his TKD in Korea and was certified in Korea.

In the ATA do you have to learn to count to 10 in Korean in order to qualify for a yellow belt? Are opening and closing commands ("Attention!", "Bow!" and "Dismissed!") given in Korean or English?

No. Can't step foot in a ATA place. Most of them are straight MCDojangs. I mean hell anyplace that makes you pay more just to be a instructor is strictly in it for the money. Learning to teach the art is something any instructor should teach a student without having them pay more. I personally believe everyone should pay the same price and learn the same thing. Martial arts schools should not have different programs that cost different prices. Thats just bull. One price and One Program. Plus if you pay more than 80 dollars a month for classes then your instructor is just after your cash and doesn't care about the art.

What a joke, Joe Corely can take it up the ***!
I've seen ATA in action, it's hilarious.
I talked to family who quit ATA because the prices were too outrageous.
You should find a better martial art and get your money back.

i was in ATA for about a year and half.

now i am not saying that all schools are like this but most of them in the ATA are open to make money and they do not teach very good it at all.

like i said i am sure there is some schools and teachers out there that are not like that.

for the most part the ATA is a corporation

ATA is more worry about your wallets than how you perform. So why would anyone take them seriously?
