I'm going to make a movie with a couple of friends, but we have a bit of a cam dilemma. We can either get a Canon ZR-700 easily and use that or fight a bit for a Canon GL1. Which should we go for?

I have a canon gl2. It's basically the same as the gl1, but with upgraded sensors, and some newer features. If you want total manual control, the gl1 (or GL2 if possible) is the best way to go without spending too much. But for overall good results and saving money as well, the zr700 will probably be a better choice. Also, you could try looking on eBay for cameras (if you're already doing this, then ignore this). I got my GL2 for $1500, so you could probably get a GL1 for at least less than $900. But if I were you, I would probably go for a ZR700. Yes the GL1 is more pro, but its really old, and I dont mean 4 or 5 years. Even the GL2 is becoming outdated now, so if you got a ZR700, it would save you a lot of money now, and then since its a newer camera, would return more of its money later when sold. Then you could take that money and buy a better camera (not HD though, until the HVX200 drops below $4000, but that's just my opinion). Anyways, I'm into making movies as well, so feel free to contact me anytime to talk about filmmaking. Hope this helps!

The answer can depend a lot on what you are going to use the camcorder for really. But, the truth is that unless you know your way around a camcorder (manual focus, etc) or need to produce movie quality footage, the ZR-700 will probably do everything you need it to. It is lighter weight and the battery should last longer than the GL1. The downside? It definitely doesn't look as cool as the GL1 in the field. :-)

I think you should go for the one with the best qualities:
Optical Zoom- about 32x (20x or 10x is standard)
CCD's(3)
LCD screen with HD
