The major natural greenhouse gases are water vapor, which causes about 36-70% of the greenhouse effect on Earth (not including clouds); carbon dioxide, which causes 9-26%; methane, which causes 4-9%, and ozone, which causes 3-7%. It is not possible to state that a certain gas causes a certain percentage of the greenhouse effect, because the influences of the various gases are not additive. (The higher ends of the ranges quoted are for the gas alone; the lower ends, for the gas counting overlaps.)[2][3] Other greenhouse gases include, but are not limited to, nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and chlorofluorocarbons (see IPCC list of greenhouse gases).

Water vapor. Let me explain why.

The "Greenhouse Effect" is largely a natural phenomena. Without it the Earth would be very cold. Water vapor causes most of that.

"Global Warming" is excessive greenhouse effect caused by man. The chief gas that causes global warming is carbon dioxide.

The excessive warming is very dangerous, and is the focus of our attention. So carbon dioxide is very important, and something we can control to some degree. But water vapor causes the most greenhouse effect.

I have been taking an Environmental Science class, for college credit, and have been learning about GHG's for the past 4 weeks.

carbon dioxide , though methane has greater strength in absorbing
infrared light than Co2, ,
this because , carbon dioxide , being heavier , occupies the lower layer of the atmosphere & contribute to the green house efffect larger than other gases , incuding methane , water vapour, nitrous oxides & also ozone .
