My 5 year old male cat is nueterued and has just finished his treatment from a UTI. But, know he will not use the litter box. It's weird. I also read that cats may not use the litter box after a UTI because they associate the litter box with pain. What should I do?

From past experience, its not nessicarily the box, but the litter. I would try changing the litter a few times, see what he likes. When you put the new litter in, bring him to the box, and he'll notice it's different. Try something thats NOT similiar to what you have now (assuming its a soft gray clupming litter), such as Crystal Blend, The Worlds Best Cat Litter ( and it truely is lol ), a litter of a different substance. You can try putting the box in a new spot as well, as thats a big no no in cat ownership, but maybe change the side of the room its in, or make it look different around the box itself (add a plant or 2 fake ones). In my past experiences, it's the difference of the appearance that brings back normality. Good Luck, cats can be such stubborn brats!

This happened with my cat too, about 4 years ago.

Long story short, we bought a new litter box and used strips of newspaper for a while instead of litter. Then we gradually put the litter back in a little at a time, mixed with the paper. Overall it took about 5 weeks until it was all litter.

Good luck!

I had a similar problem. My cat started peeing on the couch after we returned home from evacuating from Katrina. I guess the litter box he used was a reminder of the stress he went through. Well, I bought another one and placed it next to the couch. He used it and I gradually moved it closer and closer to another new litter box. It worked, he has been a good little boy ever since..

lock him in the bathroom for a couple of days (obviously, with food, water, and a clean or new litter box). his meowing may get annoying, but it's only until he realizes that his litter box isn't evil. make sure he knows that you're not mad at him and that you're happy to see him when he is released from the bathroom. cats are kind of vengeful and may leave an even worse present in your shoe if he thinks you've punished him for no good reason.

You should buy a completely new litterbox or two or three. You can find cheapo plastic ones at the dollar store. Try the same litter or a different one or both. Fill up the boxes and I bet you he will use them. You should have one litterbox per cat and one extra in your home anyway, but especially do it if he is already havin problems.

Just get rid of that old box and replce it.
