If one looks at the charities that block the supermarket doors and guilt squeeze the customers (and let the reader do the research to confirm that what is said is true here), much less than 100% of what is donated actually reaches the intended recipient. And often the needy, especially for religious bell clangers, get the same guiilt squeeze as the intended donor to join the religion, with the implication or explicit statement by the organization that the organization was the source of the donation. Of course, we know that the source of the donated items is the common person that donates - and not the operation or religion itself.

What bugs me is at Christmas time, there's a certain organization outside every walmart and kmart with their lil bells and buckets asking for donations. Don't get me wrong, I know that time of the year can get really hard on some families. But please don't harrass people to give money when they don't have it to give! Gesh! We're leaving walmart, we don't have any money left! But that's also why local churches do alot at that time of the year. People are more likely to give to the church than they are a complete stranger. They need to strike a deal with a church so they could help each other. Who knows, it might just work out for the better of the community.

I would take it to the centre management of the supermarket.
They could still have their donation tins etc. but should not be able to harass the shoppers. It gets too much. There are about a kasquillion charities and we can not give to them all. Many shops lose business due to people annoying customers at the doors.

Stop feeling guilty for not donating that particular day.
I personally never give money to random people collecting donations. I always go to the organization and make sure my money is going to a legit source and that all of it goes to the organization.
Just get over it.

i equally detest my workplace who tries to reward the departments who give the most throughout the year.
my husband and i do enough with our time and money. i tell people i'm not interested and keep going. wal-mart seems to have the biggest problem with the various beggars. maybe wally world is afraid of what consumers will think. in any case, the rest of us shouldn't be made to step over or around organized begging.
i wouldn't be ashamed. you know what you do, and you can't save the world period. do your part for whatever and be content. you're giving because you want to do so and not to impress others. i also used to work in telephonic donations. you can't show hesistation/fear with some because they will pounce on it in the disbelief that you need to be "led" to give. be firm and go on.:)

Your concience is something you can't get rid of. Spare your lose change, anything under a dollar, and it will ease your mind and help them out.
I am fortunate that I live in an area when I only have to deal with this during Christmas.
