My dog is 1 1/2 years old. He's perfectly normal and healthy. Execept, sometimes he starts to sniff things in a very neurotic and almost psychotic way. He goes around the whole apartment sniffing both me and my husband and every piece of furniture, and at the same time stops to bite his tail, not aggresively, but he continues to sniff the apartment with his tail between his legs. I don't seem to find anything that "triggers" this. It's always outta the blue.I'm out of ideas. I really don't mean to be funny but it almost looks like he's on crack. If anyone can point me in the right direction my dog and I would really appreciated.

Sounds like obsessive-compulsive behavior. My Maggie was a whiner and a crier and a paw-licker until the vet diagnosed the problem and prescribed Clomacalm - an anti-depressant. That along with behavioral training has made her normal. She is much happier and so am I.

He may have trouble with his Anal glands.Does he lick his butt a lot.Does he lick the spots that he smells.Anal glands can fill up & start leaking.Check to see if his glands are swollen. They are located at Five & seven Oclock below the anus.If they are full you will feel a couple of hard bumps. They can be manually emptied but, I would sugest having a Vet do it.

Is he neutered? This behavior is more common in dogs that aren't neutered, but it happens in neutered dogs too. He's just got an overexcitable nose.
