My normal dentist recommended that I should consider getting two titanium screwed tooth implantations. He set up a consultation with a visiting oral surgeon to talk to me about whether I am a candidate and answer questions I may have.

the oral surgeon is charging me 85 dollars. is this normal or am I being ripped off?

The dentist estimates that the surgery for the screw will cost 1000. the crown will cost 1300-1400 plus a few visits. My insurance will cover all or atleast 1000 of the crown.

He is charging you for the time he spent with you he proberly could have made more in his sugery in that time Dentist are not cheap so you have not been ripped off.You could always ask when you sign up for the whole job will the consultation fee be waived now I am doing what you advised theres no harm in giving it a try.

This is perfectly normal. You were charged a consult fee. Believe it or not, there is a medical code for this.

Nothing is for free. Yes, your consult may have been all of 1/2 hr., but this is 1/2 hr. of the Dr.'s time. There are dentists out there that will credit your consult fee if you have the work done. I know, because I work for one.

Think about it this way...how would your business florish if half of your patients came in for consultations and only 1/2 of the consults actually had the work done?

Dentists do make a pretty penny, but think of everyone they have to pay. A dental assistant can make as much as $25/hr. plus the rest of the staff, supplies, insurance...(the list goes on)

Since implants are expensive and most likely not covered by insurance, talk to your oral surgeon. Maybe he/she can work something out with you. Haggling can work.

Please be advised that only the crown is covered. That will be done by your general dentist. You may be responsible for the actual implant surgery. If the OS is unable to make pmt. arrangements visit www.carecredit.com

This company works w/ dentists to ensure full pmt. You will pay Care Credit on a monthly basis w/ no interest. The Dr. pays that. Not every Dr. uses this co. If payments would be easier on you, find a surgeon that does work w/ Care Credit.

No, 85 dollars is in the middle of the range. I went to six oral surgeons for consultations and they would have charged any where between 50 to 150 dollars. The first five surgeons were jerks, and I told them as a stormed out, to not bill me - which they did not. The fifth surgeon was wonderful, he talked to me and not at me. So ask your surgeon every question you can think of. It is a scary procedure so you need to have confidence in your doctor. Find out it they knock you out totally or just use shots and gas. Being out during the operation is best. That way you can't hear those little titanium posts being nailed in your head!! I have 4 implants, and love them. I will never see the light of day financially, but at least I can laugh about being broke and look good doing it. Best to you, my friend.

According to the logic that some of you who work for dentists or are dentists suggest, is that we the public must be obliged and obligated to pay a consult fee to a professional dentist/oral surgeon for his time and opinion. I am considered by many to be a professional; Therefore my future employer should feel obligated to pay me for my time to be interviewed by him or her, whether I get hired or not. LOL its only right. If you believe that, then believe that there are no bad dentists only more expensive ones.
My dentist sent me to his specialist for an opinion to be rendered on whether I needed a root canal performed. The specialist, after the fact, wanted to charge me $125 for his opinion. I never went back to him, and I never went back to my original dentist that I had been faithfully seeing for 25 years.

Wow, That is a crazy amount of money to spend for everything!! I needed crowns and with my dental benefits there were no limits on anything I needed and they only cost me $550.00 each. Thats even with high noble metal!! The dental benefits saves you up to 80% on your dental work. I always encourage people to stay with there insurance instead of using dental benefits but it doesn't sound like good insurance to me.

Check out the site below to see if they can save you some money and I doubt you will be paying for a consulation.....thats crazy!!

It is normal to charge a fee if they wish. However there are dentists out there who offer free consultations. Check around if you'd like..view their phone book ads, web pages or call them. In my area there are several who advertise free consultations for implants.
