I have never heard of this before!! I have a male cavalier (soon to be desexed) and I was considering getting a female cavalier also (will also be desexed). Do females get 'periods' when they are desexed, and how much blood when they do they bleed? Thanks!

Dogs do NOT get periods. They have heat cycles. Although there is bleeding associated with the heat cycle, it's a TOTALLY different process. How much a dog in heat varies greatly, from a few drops that might go unnoticed, to leaving spots on the floor wherever they walk. When a female dog is spayed, the ovaries and uterus are completely removed, and there are no more heat cycles or bleeding after that. If you get her fixed at 5-6 months (which is the usual reccommended time), she will never have a heat cycle at all. Spaying before the first heat also virtually eliminates the chances of her getting mammary cancer later in life.

A word from the grammar police: Desexing is the proper term for "fixing" and can be used when talking about a spay or neuter, and the word means that the sexual organs are removed-not that the animals don't have sex (which they don't, because no sex organs=no sex drive).

Normally, the females are spayed long before their first cycle. It's called pre-estrus & estrus. The pre part lasts about 7-10 days, the estrus part (where they bleed & "lock up" with males) is after that for 7-10 days. The males will be interested in them the whole time, the females only during the estrus phase. They really don't bleed a whole lot. It's just annoying drops of blood you find all over the house.
Normally a vet will spay your female at 4 months of age. Their cycles tend to start at 6-9 months of age.

Technically, dogs don't get periods, but do into heat.

Females go into heat about every 6 months. and the heat cycle lasts for 21days.

The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks.

The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen.

Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter.

Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.

While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies. I will also lower her risk to several types of cancer.

When you have a female dog spayed there is no periods, at all. All of their reproductive organs are permanently removed. So, no periods and no babies either. I bet your Cavalier is beautiful. You sound like a very responsible pet owner. Good luck to you with both of your Cavaliers. They really are beautiful dogs. Hope this helps : )

Their periods are called heats. They get them every 6 months starting at 6 months old, and if you get her spayed you will not have to worry about it. They do not bleed if they are spayed, but they can bleed quite a bit if they are not spayed.

they aren't desexed...desexed means you have no sex...
you neuter a male dog and spay a female dog...after the female is spayed, she will NOT go into heat...so no 'periods'...
