my yellow lab has a growth on her left side right near her hind leg...

my uncle's mom had a lot of labs throughout the years and said that it could just be a fat deposit and that there was a way to tell the difference between that and a tumor...

my dog was the runt of the litter, and we dont really have enough money to take her to the vet, so if someone could help, that would really be a big help :)

Labradors commonly get Lipomas (fat lumps under the skin).
Characteristics of lipoma's are: Slow growing (over months/years) and are mobile so when you put your hand around them they move freely under the skin. They are softish in feeling
Signs are a cancer: Hard, non mobile, fast growing (days/weeks).

Lipomas sometimes need to be removed even though they are a benign tumour as they rub on ground when dog sits, growth too big and inhibit normal functions of the dog or become ulcerated and turn into an open sore.

this totally depends. With our old lab who has since died, he had them and they were tumors but they werent malignant and never bothered him or anything. Our current yellow lab has them and one was a calcium deposit and the others are fatty type squishy deposits. If it is bothering your dog, grows, or affects the skin you may need to take it to the vet and have it looked at or possibly biopsied. If it doesnt grow or seem to be bothering the dog and hes otherwise healthy, just let it go. Usually they are nothing to worry significantly about. Good luck!

call your local shelter and tell them you have a pet you need to get checked out but you are "broke" and they may be able to help you...you can always call your local vet and ask them to just do a exam and they can tell you right away what it is...That would only be $10-20 out of your pocket..and you'll have the security of knowing if its something you can leave alone and not worry about or if you need to get more medical help for your pet. Labs are VERY prone to fatty tumors..but dont take for granted thats what it is until you have someone check it out...

I had a yellow lab too. It probably is a fatty deposit. Most dogs get these in various places when they get older. However if your dog "favors" it when it is touched it is NOT a fatty deposit and you should seek vet help.

Usually if they are kind of squishy feeling they are lipomas (fatty tumors that are not cancerous and can only be removed surgically). If it is hard, I would save your money and get her to the vet as soon as you possibly can.
