when I was little we said the word "hell" in Sunday school a lot, and we also said virgin (we said these words during our lessons) most non-Christian people don't let their kids say these words, the Bible includes many innapropriate things, but it has that to teach right from wrong, how come non-Christian people don't allow their kids to learn the word "hell" or "virgin"

I will allow my daughter to know the words 'hell' and 'virgin', as well as homosexual, and many other words and concepts that 'the bible says is wrong'.

Ok, you lost me with the concluding fragmented statement:

"...how come non-Christian people don't allow their kids to learn the word "hell" or "virgin".

I will answer this question to the best of my ability.

First, a large number of non-Christians take on the life of being non-Christian after being born and raised in a Christian home which entailed going to church and Sunday school. This is where they learned the true conotations of those two terms.

Second, lots of non-Christians, along some point in their lives will, somehow, learn the conotations of these two terms, that is, if they have two brain cells to rub together.

However, it is the uneducated and uninquisitive that you speak of which, in this case, supports your (attempted) question. I understand this. Those, that you speak of, walk through the days of their lives believing that "hell" is a cuss word and that "virgin" is simply just a woman who's never engaged in sexual intercourse with a man. Believe that I understand this.

You are not the first to wonder, nor are you the last.

My advice, educate them well, when you encounter such simple-mindedness. For they may have never known otherwise.

Good day...

Humm you are very uninformed. I don't know what religon you are refering to but I wonder if this is just an assumption on your part. We may use different languages but the word is still the same. We prefer a word that translates better as chaste than virgin but it's all the same. You should stay chaste until marriage. And we make "hell and brimstone preachers" look like Sunday school teachers. I know the Jewish are very similar. But most truely religous people teach there children there is a time and place for that type of talk, and it is within the family and not out in public. If you know it in your heart, you have no need to remind yourself in public.

I teach Jr. High English and Bible at a Christian School and we talk about these words all the time, but I wouldn't use them around kindergardeners...whether in church, Christian school, public school, or wherever.

We believe that there are certain words that are just inappropriate for younger ears. Virgin is avoided because it must be used to in a context of sex...so we don't discuss that until later for obvious reasons. Hell can be used in a vain way, when in fact it is a serious issue in our eyes. "God" should be said, but not in vain (like in an exclamation). So the point is that we don't allow words to be used inappropriately, or certain words used at an inappropriate age.

Consider this: the Bible talks about some pretty racy and difficult matters. In fact, some Jewish communities would not allow men to read the Song of Solomon until they were in their 20's or 30's because of its obvious sensuality.

The Bible is the truth...and for it to be truthful and honest about a sinful world, it must be very blunt in places. It is not a sin to protect children from some things that they are not ready for.

Blessings,

You may be generalizing from limited experience. In general, "hell" and "damn" are considered vulgar swear words except when used in a religious context, which is in itself odd, because only in a religious context can they be taken seriously. In other words, when people are actually being damned to hell, it's okay to mention those words, but when someone uses them casually, where no torture is expected or even wished, they're considered vulgar.

Go figure.

The term "virgin" is variously considered a bit too sexual, but it is used in many common terms, such as "virgin olive oil," "virgin timber," or the "Virgin Islands." Queen Elizabeth I was known as the Virgin Queen, and the colony (and later state) of Virginia was named for her. However, we've grown a bit more prudish through the years, and anyone who has yet to have sex, while considered a virgin, does not usually consider this a topic for polite company. However, I'm certain that there are plenty of virgins who eat virgin olive oil near virgin forests and dream of vacations in the Virgin Islands, and all with the greatest of gentile manners.

You said - ...most non-Christian people don't let their kids say these words,...

hell is a fixture in christianity because we don't want to go there.
Catholics are ones that are fixated on the word virgin. Don't lump christians in on that. Yes catholics believe in Jesus but from my experience as a former catholic they dwell alot on the virgin Mary. Catholics don't even believe that Mary had kids by Joseph.

Because "Hell" is a curse word (in a certain context) and "virgin" is not usually understood by children (how many Christian children really understand the meaning of "virgin" as "one who has not had sex"?). Using them in the settings they often are, they aren't really words appropriate for children.

I'm christian and I don't allow my kids to know those words either. I was raised christian and we didn't say those words.I honestly don't know of any Christians who do talk like that with the exception of the more extreme sects of christianity, ie...insane.

I have never heard of a non-christian not allowing their children to learn those words. I think you are being a bit ridiculous.

How about, fornication, defile or unclean, these words are usually not in a childs vocabulary, or learned at school, yet its alright if its religious to talk about prostitutes and the like.
