Can serious art be a little of both? Although this painting does have a whimsical, cartoonish flavor to it would you consider it serious enough to be serious art? Can you see the life cycle I'm trying to convey? Please let me know what you think.

I finished this late last night. It’s based on a song (sort of) by Leonard Cohen called ‘Ain’t No Cure For Love.’

Things that look cartoons can be considered fine art. It depends on the intent of the artist. You should see if you can find info on Jenny Schmid, she an artist and art professor from the University of Minnesota. Her prints look cartoonish, but they are great fine art. I do see suggestions of a like cycle, I see cells traveling through blood and clearly an image of death. I'm not sure if I understand a cycle because it is there or because you pointed it out. But you don't always have to be specific with your viewer give them a little credit and a little room for exploration of your symbolism.

Hmm, interesting question.

I think the following:

People have a tendency to want to categorize things, when categorization is not necessarily the best thing. People call one thing "good" art, another thing "bad" art. There's "high" and "low", "realistic" and "abstract". To me, these labels don't really help.

People have different styles. Stay true to what you think your art should look like, no matter what the current social/cultural situation is (unless you're making socially or culturally relevant art, in which case it would have to change). More importantly, don't let opinions distract you from your artistic purpose and goals.

So, then, "serious" art... is there really such a thing? Who decides what that means? Much of Picasso's work is what one might call "cartoony" or "simple"... but is anyone trying to criticize his work as "not serious"? [The answer is yes, but that's beside the point. :) ]

Anyway, I like your art. Keep it up.

God bless.

I wouldn't call your art cartoonish. Rather, I would say that it has strong linear qualities, and is most definitely fine art. It's very narrative and, yes, I see the cycle that you're trying to convey. The simplicity of your color palette adds a great deal of strength to your subject matter (in Sub-Saharan Africa, these would be considered "power" colors). I also like the way the tall format of your work mirrors the overall linearity of the piece. Using a "standard" shaped canvas would lessen its impact in this regard.

Great job! We should all turn out such wonderful things late at night!

Thanks for sharing your work. :)

DUDE!!! your work is wayyyyyy cool. This is my type of art! I would not call it cartoony at all. Since my whole life is based around the arts, I can honestly tell you that you may one day find your works in a gallery.... You have a depth and interpretive relay of mind-to-pen-to-paper that if done in the right media, will do you well in your future. Nuff said!!!
