My Mom's boyfriend Herb says my dreams of becoming an Astronaut are silly. How should I react?

He says I have only wanted to become an Astronaut since I learned that they get to wear diapers during takeoff and re-entry. He seems to have influenced my mom because she says it 'isn't dignified to soil oneself in space'.

Well, that may be the case, but that doesn't mean my dreams are not valid and acheivable.

How can I keep Herb from squashing my dreams?

in all my years as a travelling used accordion salesman, i have yet to find a place where soiling oneself was undignified. often my customers find it to be a wonderful ice breaker. sometimes their disgust with me is so apparent that they throw their own feces at me (which i assume is a form of payment).

still my parents have always taught me that every time you dream about things, god gives aids to one of the tiny elves that live inside my knees. so perhaps, herb is just trying to save the tiny elves inside of you...

Your mom's boyfriend sounds like a jerk. Your mom should really stand by you. What does this Herb character really know, what a crummy comment. Diapers during takeoff and re-entry, so what.
Your dreams are your own, don't let some crummy jerk take them away. If you really want to become an Astronaut stop listening to people like him or her, brace yourself for the training to come and for that you need good grades and perfect physical condition. Find out from Nasa what is needed and start building your dream as of now.

oh, being an Astronaut is a great job from what ive heard, you float in space, get payed a whole lot, and you explore where people havent gone before. You see stars, and lots of planets. As long as you work hard and ignore her attempts to crush your dreams id say your fine

My mom once told me, "Oh, Natalie! Get realistic" when I told her that I wanted to be a dolphin trainer. I've never forgotten that and although my dreams have since changed, I always wondered how I would feel if she never would have said that. It really SUCKS!! that your mom is taking Herb's side. it sounds like someone wants to laugh you out of the astronaut program before you get into it.

if you work hard enough to get into the astronaut program, the laughs will be on them. after all, just getting into the astronaut program is a tremendous achievement, even if you never get into space.

it's possible your dreams will change, but for now enjoy the challenge, get good grades in math and science, and look forward to a good laugh some day.
