Well, it depends on the beer, and if you are concerned about “skunky and flat”, then I assume you drink a decent brand?
Mass-produced mass-market brands has a short-ish shelf life, and extreme heat or extreme cold can damage any beer, but more so the pathetic run-of-the-mill big-brand beer.
A decently brewed beer will have a shelf life of 6 months to two years, and like my brand new friend carinata said above, some of them an actually last for freaking decades!
But leave it out of the sun where it will get too warm, leave it out of the darkest, deepest pit of the cellar where it may freeze, and a decent beer will last a few months.
Not so decent beers, 60 days, tops. But then again, they were undrinkable to begin with.

if you got from the refridgerated section, keep the beer cool. if you put some place warm and than chill it again, it will become skunky.
i'd put the beer in a cool place like the fridge or a basement (if the basement is made out of cement).
the beer should have an expiration date. drink it or cook with it before the expiration date!

It depends on the style of beer. Mass produced lagers such as bud have a shelf life of approximately 60 days. While other beers such as Lambics, Barleywines and Olde ales can last 20-30 years or more, and actually improve depth and complexity with time

Skunkiness comes from two sources. Tempurature flucuation and light, especially clear bottles. Keep it cool and away from light and it will last months. That's how it is kept in warehouses etc...
