For the amount of activity that goes on shouldn't the police be doing more arrests then they are and breaking these rings of crime thoughout our country?

You don't even know how much they WISH they could do more. For one thing, they are FAR outnumbered by drug dealers and drug buyers. A lot of the drug dealers aren't even selling them on street corners, and the majority of them are well hidden by their buyers. The laws also tend to favor the dealers, and not the cops. Do you realize how much red tape cops have to chop through to do ANYTHING? If they don't follow procedure to the LETTER, then they might as well not bother to make an arrest, because the whole case gets thrown out. And unfortunately, there's so MUCH red tape that by the time the cops have the proper warrants to do their darned job, the drugs and the dealers are gone. The police don't "cover up" drug activity. BELIEVE ME. They're more frustrated than anyone that they can't possibly keep up with it.

Judges and Prosecutors have become immune to drug dealing and see it as just another drug offense. In fed cases defendants always get jammed up big time. But our state courts generally will not send people to jail on any first and most second drug offenses even if they are multiple count dist charges. The jails are overcrowded locally so EVERYONE is fingerprinted and released..and they always beat us out the door cause our paperwork takes longer. Then our state prison keeps changing its classification on what a violent offender is...drug dealer with guns are no longer violent offenders. Heck even someone convicted of murder 2 in our state can be out in only a few years.
The whole system is bogged down. I say expand the death penalty..shut the damned borders down and treat all illegals to our country like our citizens are treated in other countries (i.e. that you dont retain citizens rights when you are in the country as part of a criminal act.)

Drug dealers take time to bust they have right sjust like you do. You need survalince, warrants and buys to make a bust worth a crap. If you tell the public where and when and who the snithches are dont you think the dealers will find out. Cover up is bad word to use. Police are only half of the situation, a judge just gonna slap in jail for few days and let him out on bond. Its the whole judical system.

Many times, the police will not bust one person for possesion, but instead offer them a pardon in exchange for information on the dealer.

By arresting the dealer, the police can prevent much more drug use than they would if they simply arrested the user.

I don't think they cover up drug activity. In our town, there was just a big drug bust. Every arrest is reported to the media. Information on ongoing cases, of course, is withheld to protect undercover officers. One problem is that there is too much drug activity and not enough resources to meet the problem. Our local "drug unit" has no shortage of leads. It's just a question of which one to follow up on that day. Another problem is court backlog, etc.

With our Justice system the police's hands are tied. In most precincts it is just a matter of money and resources that are available. I would say that 90% of the men and women who do public service are doing it for the "right reasons" and the other 10% are probably crooked. That rings true in almost everything we do. Over all I believe that our men and women in uniform are doing what they can.

I feel they should be going after the harder drugs and those bringing it into the country, or the bigger suppliers. The police get smarter, but only after the criminal has.

I do not want taxes to go up to build more jails for someone who has a spec of pot on them. This to me is ridiculous.
A drug reform has to be done in the USA. Quit filling our jails with small time dealers, users and go get the big boys....

Well, in some places it's out of the police's hands. Like gang fights where no one is killed, often times no arrests are made.

I believe for the most part, that officers do the best they can. Most of them are overworked and underpaid. They spend so much time writing reports and filling out necessary paperwork, that by the time they're done the in-custodys are walking out the doors of the jail.

They do good work, but lets face it, the ACLU has tied the hands of law enforcement for years.
