There are probably specialty tea stores, or British ex-pat stores where you are. They usually have good tea. I second the recommendation to look in your local yellow pages or on google.

One national chain that has good tea is Cost Plus World Market. They have some Twinings, but also a lot of Republic of Tea teas, Mighty Leaf, and sometimes Revolution. Failing that, try your local gourmet grocery store (Bristol Farms, Gelson's, Fresh Market, etc.)

If you have a Peet's Coffee or a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf near you, they have good loose leaf tea as well.

Some good brands are:

Republic of Tea
Mighty Leaf (mesh bag with long leaf tea, not tea dust)
Revolution (also mesh bag with long leaf tea)
Twinings is good, but it is very easy to find it at regular grocery stores. The first three are harder to find.

My personal favorite type of tea is Lapsang Soushong or its similar cousin Russian Caravan (sometimes easier to find). Don't be fooled by the Asian name- it is black tea, not herbal or green tea. It is very smoky and strong, though, so if your mom likes milder flavors, I would stay away from that and go for something like Prince of Wales (I know Twinings makes this), or one of the earl greys made by Mighty Leaf or Revolution. Revolution makes a lavender earl grey that tastes pretty good, IMO.

Look in the Yellow Pages of the phone book for a tea shop nearby, then go and ask a clerk this same question. He or she can direct you to something nice.

IF, however, you are stuck using Market Basket, go browse the tea aisle. Look for anything in the Twining brand. They're a little pricey, but are definitely worth it -- especially as a gift. These are really nice, and are actually still made in Britain, as far as I know. If she likes a strong one, get English Breakfast or even Irish Breakfast. If she likes fancier ones, try Earl Grey. The Lady Grey tea is very special, too.

As for something to go with it, some nice tea biscuits or water crackers and a small jar of a fancy berry jam would probably be appreciated.

Hi there. May I know where are you located?
If you are in Singapore, there's a nice English tea store near where I work called T Connection, located at Millenia Walk shopping mall.
They have heaps of English teas & unique blends. You are sure to find something nice for your mum there.

Hope this helps. :)

Your best bet would be to check your local directory phone book and find a shop that specializes in tea. They do exist! I'm not sure where you live, but we have a Cargo & James here that sells many, many flavours of tea, and any place like that is sure to have gift baskets.

Also try- Tazo Tea. There are lots of different flavors of them that vary from English teas to African teas and you can buy Tazo at Starbuck's or a local grocery store.

there is a recipe for friendship tea, its not a "nice tea" but its something you could make for her, and actually quite good.

Ingredients
1 cup Tang Bev.Mix
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup Instant Tea powder
1/2 cup instant lemonade
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Preparation
Combine ingredients and store in a tightly covered jar. To serve, combine two teaspoons of tea mix with one cup hot water, or for iced friendship tea, use one tablespoon per glass of ice water.
