A sprained ankle hurts alot and can sometimes be as painfull as a broken ankle. Sprain usually causes swelling on bruising and doctors usually can tell with the x-ray that it is a sprain because the bone won't be broken. Here are some pics and some info websites.

the normal reaction to a sprained ankle is for the injured party to limp. only if you've had one do you know what it feels like. the limp is an unconscious attempt to take the weight off of that foot'. a doctor may only order an x-ray in a case of a severe sprain to make sure there are no minor bone fractures. localized swelling and a history of the incident may be all the doctor needs for his diagnosis. i had a mild sprain when i was younger and decided to tough it out with ice and aspirin. after a couple of days i re-sprained it playing ball. it wasn't healing and it got to the point where i couldn't walk without pain. i laid off sports the rest of that year and all of the following year. the ankle healed and i never again had a problem with it.

First of all you will have to step wrong or land wrong while jumping, to injure your ankle
First will be "point" pain at the site of the injury (stretched Ligament)Also you will start to get swelling at the site, which should be controlled with cold (ice wrapped in a cloth)

X-rays will not show a sprain, only a break, A break will have a Grinding sound (crepitus) when moved, a sprain won't
A break will hurt more and you won't be able to stand on it (excrutiating to stand on) but a sprain you can stand on lightly, you just won't want to.

In first aid, there is a certain way of wrapping it with a tensor bandage to give it support for a couple of days. Sorry , can't tell you, can only show you.
