We are both British and have been together for 6 years, I have been offered a job at a University in the US.

How do we get a working VISA for her? Would she automatically get one if married to me? At least, I assume that if married she could come with me with no threat of having to leave. When in the country, could she then apply to work legally? Is this easy?

I am interested in your own experiences.

Actually, if this is a "common law" marriage by your country's standards, you can bring her over, even if you don't have a marriage certificate. However, that can get complicated, and if you're planning to get married anyway, it would save you a big headache.

Also, if she comes over as your dependent (H-4 visa), she will not be able to work. Period. And no, she does not automatically get a working visa.

What she can do is come over as an H-1 like you, or come over as an H-4 and change to an H-1 after she gets a job. No matter what, she will not be able to work unless she changes visa types.

She has to apply for a visa on her own merit.

I have just moved from the UK to the US with my husband. He got a visa through his work but if I want to work I have to apply on my own.

You have to get interviewed etc at the US embassy.I was asked questions even though I didn't not apply for a working visa.

Good luck

you can't. she has to get permission by herself from her government. She needs to already have a job ready for her in the U.S. Unless the company wants her to come to the U.S., her country's government would least likely to give her a working VISA. The company also needs to be a major company. If her work is promoting her immigration, she is more likely to get a working visa
