I have a lifelong friend , that i love like a brother. However, I am seeing changes. For instance..can only eat one thing on his plate before starting another. We can be playing cards and all of a sudden he will get up because the wash rag on the sink is not hanging over the faucet correctly or he will get up to straighten a throw rug or move a lamp a fraction of an inch over. There are other little idocincricies. Is this a sign of obsessive/compulsive behavior? Can it develop later in life?

I eat the same way ... Yes it is a sign of OCD and so is the rest which is not a bad thing its pretty normal these days actually. You are not generally born with it ... its just something that develops as you develop.
It tends to be seen more frequently in those who have parents and or family members with the same tendancies or another OCD ...

Really I dont see that most OCDs cause anything more than simple frustration but if you are concened politely mention the possiblity and ask him if he ever thought about talking to anyone about it ...
If he dosent see a problem with it then accept it. You are his friend and one of the best things about a true friend is they accept you as you are and support you .... be a good friend and show him that ...

I too like your friend have developed being obsessive/ compulsive. When I was a child I was as well I believe but being young i could not control what i could or could not do. as I got older I noticed that more and more I had to do things a certain way. I almost laughed out loud when i read your question because it sounds like me. Its a day to day battle and the best way to deal with your friend is to just go along with what they do because they really cannot control what they feel as they are doing these things....trust me I have tried. So in other word it can manifest later in life but there was probably an inclination of it earlier....it just gets worse as time goes on.

I wish that i didnt go through it.

Yes that is most defiantly obsessive compulsive disorder....It can be developed later in life or the first sighs can show like 3 years or more before the disorder actually takes full blown effect... It just really depends on the person really because he could have inherited by any of his loved ones meaning genetically handed down to him...My option is let him be examined by a local counselor or psychologist or tell one so they could talk with the guy...It is very important that you do because it could later turn into something very dangerous...To much more to go into here now but please take my advice

It does manifest later in life, most people will not show symptoms and behaviors until late 20's or early 30's. I was reading up on it a few years ago, and that's the one piece of information that sticks w/ me. It sounds as if your friend may want to get evaluated. Good luck!

Yes it can develop over time. There are a lot of factors that can contribute to this. Medication helps.
