My reserve unit (mp unit) is relocating in September, from Florida to California. I heard that they may move us to an airborne unit. I thought only airborne personel or airborne qualified made up airborne units. Most of us are supply, mp, cooks, mechanics etc....

lol i doubt theyll send us to airborne school, that would be cool though

Not ALL personnel in an airborne unit are jump qual. Most of them, yes, but the support, supply, etc.. folks that'd not have to move to a forward staging, or deployment arena don't have to be. From what I've heard. (been out for awhile) They've just recently started allowing Legs into airborne postings. When I was still active, it was different. (no offense on the "leg" is for simplicity. LoL.)
Those who're assigned to airborne stations, are often being offered a slot to jump school. I suspect being an MP, you'd be up there on the list of soldiers encouraged to try. Give it a shot! I've never regretted having the wings!

There are only two Airborne units in the ARMY. The 82nd AirBorne and the 173 Airborne Combat brigade. And I don't believe either of them, have cav scouts. Just because your airborne qualified, does not mean you get assigned to an airborne unit. Or get jump pay every month. You have to jump, to collect jump pay.

No, they have some who are not airborne! Many now are Air mobile!

The 82nd Airborne is also a "conventional" unit. They are certainly NOT part of SOCOM !

Some personnel assigned to leg units are airborne-qualified, but most are not. Some elements assigned to the 18th
Airborne Corps are leg however,

XVIII Airborne Corps.

Most of the elements in The XVIII Airborne Corps are NOT airbone qualified at all.

and the 101st "Airborne" Division isn't Airborne, it's an Air Assault division. (It was Airborne in Vietnam, at least the 1st Brigade (Detached)) was while I was there. At that time the 173 rd Airborne Brigade and the 1st of the 101'st! The rest of the 101st was sent later, as was the 82nd Airborne!

Not all soldiers in an airborne unit are paratroopers. They won't send you to airborne school, you have to volunteer. When I was in, I volunteered and then had to take a physical training test to qualify. We got 55 bucks a month more and it helped you get promoted faster. Don't worry, all parachutes have a lifetime guarantee.

Nope, went to Desert Storm was attached to the 18th Airborne P &A Grp out of Ft Bragg. We get to wear that as our Combat Patch. There is no sane reason to jump out of airplane

even the 82nd Airborne is moving towards having only trigger pullers who would actually conduct an airborne operation in combat as airborne qualified...

As in Military Police?

In any case, an airborne unit is not all jumpers. :D

If you're support personnel, you'll should still be support for the new unit.
