D80. It has all the features of the D70, and a number of improvements. Just the LCD being larger is easier on the eyes, especially during shot review. And you can zoom in further during review to verify clarity & detail. I think the $300 (average) difference is worth it, although if you can get the D70S kit with the 18-70 for under $800, new, snag it. Just make sure it's from a legitimate dealer.

D80 - newest model, has several more features and a much better viewfinder. Not to mention it is 10 mp vs 6mp. I have a d70 (not the S version) and I love it but I drool on the D80. My biggest beef with the D70 is the viewfinder - it is a little small, the D80 has a much better one(similar to the D200). - but I still love it. Go to a camera store and compare.

The reviews are very close but the D80 is getting slightly better ones and it is the newer camera. I'd definitely be getting the D80:

I went with the D80 and have only praise for it...many more features in a slightly smaller package...

Another vote for the D80. More megapixels, better autofocus and high ISO performance.

those cheap emergancy rain ponchos, a knife and some electrical tape can make a good raincoat for any camera. Take a lens hood, tape around it and then trim to fit the camera outfit and over your head (that way you looking into the camera does not expose it to the rain.). When you need the rain gear, just attach the ready made camera raincoat and snap away.
